If, when sleeping at night, one dreams of the form of a Buddha, or the form of a deity, or the form of a renunciate, or a king, or a Chakravartin king, or the form of a lion king, or a lotus, or a Udumbara flower, or a great mountain, or an ocean, or the sun, or the moon, or a white elephant, or a white horse, or the form of one's parents, and so forth, or sees a flower, or fruit, or gold, or silver, or crystal, or lapis lazuli, and other precious jewels, or dreams of obtaining milk with five flavors, then at that time, one should know that the Tathagata has accepted their offering. Having awakened, one becomes exceedingly joyful and happy, obtains various desired objects, is without malice, and becomes inclined to practice virtuous Dharma. Son of good family, this Mahaparinirvana Sutra is capable of accomplishing all such immeasurable, countless, and inconceivable merits. Son of good family, you should have faith in these words of mine. If any son or daughter of good family wishes to see me, wishes to honor me, wishes to see me in accordance with the Dharma, wishes to attain the Samadhi of Emptiness, wishes to see the true characteristics, wishes to cultivate the Heroic Progress Samadhi and the Lion King Samadhi, wishes to destroy the eight kinds of demons, the so-called eight kinds of demons are the four demons, as well as impermanence, suffering, selflessness, and impurity. If one wishes to be born as a human, wishes to obtain the happiness of the gods, one should uphold, write, read, recite, expound, and explain this Mahaparinirvana Sutra, and if one sees someone contemplating and practicing its meaning, one should approach them, draw near to them, abide with them, pray and request, offer, respect, and serve them, wash their feet, spread out a seat, and offer them with the four requisites, and should not disturb them. If they come from a long distance, one should greet them up to ten yojanas away. For the sake of this Sutra, one should offer with all precious treasures. If one does not have them, one can even sell one's own body. Why is that? Because this Sutra is an Udum

It is because it is difficult to encounter (Sanskrit, vara, vara, obstacle). Son of lineage, in the past, countless, immeasurable, boundless kalpas ago, at that time, in this world realm called the Saha world, there appeared the Buddha Shakyamuni, the Tathagata, Arhat, Samyak-sambuddha, Vidyā-caraṇa-sampanna, Sugata, Lokavid, Anuttara-puruṣa-damya-sārathi, Śāsta deva-manushyānām, Buddha, Bhagavan, who taught this Great Nirvana Sutra to many retinues. At that time, I heard from a virtuous friend that the Buddha was teaching the Great Nirvana to many retinues. Hearing this, I was very happy and thought of offering something, but because I was poor, I had nothing. I thought of selling my body, but I failed because my merit was too small. On the way home, I met a man and said to him: I am selling this body, will you buy it? He said: I have a task that no one can do. If you can do it, I will buy it. I asked him: What is it that no one can do? He said: I have a terrible disease, and the doctors have diagnosed that it is effective to eat three ounces of human flesh every day. If you can cut off three ounces of flesh from your body every day and give it to me, I will give you five gold coins. When I heard this at that time, I was very happy. I also said: You give me the gold coins, give me a seven-day grace period, I will finish my work, and I will do as you wish. He said: Seven days is not possible, if it is really possible, give me one day. Son of lineage, at that time I took the gold coins and went back to where the Buddha was, prostrated at his feet with my head, offered everything I had, and then listened to this sutra attentively. At that time, because my faculties were dull, although I heard this sutra, I only remembered one four-line verse. Which one? The Nirvana of the Tathagata is the cutting off of all samsara, whoever single-mindedly

If one listens attentively to the earth, one will always attain immeasurable bliss. Having held this verse, I returned to the house of that sick person. Son of good family, at that time, even though I cut off three ounces of meat every day, I did not become ill due to the cause and condition of remembering this verse. Without interruption for even a single day, I gave in that way for a month. Son of good family, due to that cause and that condition, the sick person recovered. My body also became as before, without wounds. At that time, seeing that my body was not harmed, I generated the mind of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. If even the power of a single verse can do so much, what need is there to mention fully holding, reading, or reciting it? Seeing that this sutra has such benefits, I generated an even greater mind than before and made the aspiration: 'May I attain the enlightenment of a Buddha in the future, and may my name become Shakyamuni.' Son of good family, due to the cause and condition of the power of that one verse, today I will fully proclaim it to gods and humans among many retinues. Son of good family, therefore, this great Nirvana is inconceivable, possessing immeasurable and boundless qualities. This is the essence spoken by the Buddhas, the Bhagavad Ones, after contemplation. Therefore, whoever holds it will abandon and cut off evil outflows. What is called evil is the place where evil yaks, evil horses, evil cows, dogs, and venomous snakes dwell, the land of evil thorns, cliffs, abysses, terrifying places, deer and marmots, evil people, evil lands, evil cities, evil houses, evil friends, and so on. If such things are the cause of generating outflows, the Bodhisattva should abandon them. If they are not the cause, then they should not be abandoned. If they generate outflows, then they should be abandoned. If they do not generate outflows, then they should not be abandoned. If they practice evil Dharma, then they should be completely abandoned. If they practice virtuous Dharma, then they should not be abandoned. How should they be abandoned? Without holding weapons, they should always be abandoned by means of a peaceful mind. Therefore, one should
