Although knowing it is foolish, it is also known that virtuous and sinful actions will not be without effect, although there are many kinds of actions, there is no specific actor, although there is a place that has been gone to, there is no goer, although there is bondage, there is no one bound, and although there is nirvana, it is also known that there is no cessation. This is called the profound meaning of intention. Then, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, the universally appearing, noble and glorious king, said to the Bhagavan (Blessed One): Bhagavan, as I understand it, the meaning of what the Bhagavan said, "The unheard becomes heard," is not like that. What is the reason for that? If it exists, then it must be the nature of existence. If it does not exist, then it must be the nature of non-existence. It is impossible for the non-existent to arise, and it is impossible for the existent to cease. Since what is heard is heard, and what is unheard is unheard, why is it said that the unheard becomes heard? Bhagavan, what is unheard cannot become heard, and what was previously heard will not become the first heard. What is the reason for that? Because it has already been heard before. Therefore, why is it said that the unheard becomes heard? For example, going is having gone, so it is not going. Going is not having gone. Also, for example, having been born, one will not not be born, and not being born will not become being born. Having obtained, one will not not obtain, and not obtaining will not become obtaining. Having heard, one will not not hear, and not hearing will not become hearing is also the same. Bhagavan, if the unheard becomes heard, then all sentient beings who do not have bodhi will become having bodhi, those who have not attained nirvana will become attaining nirvana, and those who have not seen the Buddha-nature will become seeing the Buddha-nature. Why is it also said that the Bodhisattvas abiding on the ten bhumis see the Buddha-nature, but it has not yet become manifest? Bhagavan, if the unheard becomes heard, then from whom did the Tathagata hear before? If he had heard, why did the Tathagata not teach from the scriptures? If not

Hearing this, the Tathagata will attain unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment. If all sentient beings hear what they have not heard, they also have the potential to attain unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment. If the Tathagata were to see the Buddha-nature without hearing this Great Nirvana Sutra, then all sentient beings would also not hear this sutra, and there would be the potential to see the Buddha-nature. World Honored One, some forms are visible, and some forms are invisible. Sound is also the same, some are audible, and some are inaudible. However, Great Nirvana is not form, nor is it sound, so why do you say seeing and hearing? World Honored One, the past has ceased, so it cannot be heard; the future has not arrived, so it cannot be heard; at the time of present hearing, it cannot be said to be hearing, because after hearing, the sound has ceased, so it cannot be said to be hearing. This Great Nirvana is also not past, future, or present. If it is not in the three times, then it cannot be spoken. If it cannot be spoken, then it cannot be heard. Why do Bodhisattvas diligently study this Great Nirvana Sutra, so that those who have not heard may hear? At that time, the World Honored One said to the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, the Universally Illuminating, Noble, Auspicious King: "Good, good! Son of noble family, you know that all dharmas are like illusions, like mirages, like cities of Gandharvas, like drawings on water, like water bubbles, like foam, like plantain trees, empty and without substance, without life, without self, without suffering or happiness, just as those who abide in the ten bhumis of Bodhisattvas know and see, it is very well understood, good!" At that time, in that very mandala of the retinue, in an instant, a great light appeared, not blue but seeing blue, not yellow but seeing yellow, not red but seeing red, not white but seeing white, not color but seeing color, not appearance but seeing appearance, not seeing but becoming seeing, this is called seeing. At that time

When the light touched the many retinues, their bodies and minds were exceedingly blissful, just as practitioners enter the Samadhi of the Lion King. Then, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Manjushri asked the Bhagavan: 'From where did these rays of light come?' At that time, the Tathagata did not speak, nor did he teach. The Bodhisattva Light Holder (Od srung) again asked Manjushri: 'For what reason and cause does this light illuminate the many retinues?' Manjushri also did not speak, nor did he answer. Then, the Bodhisattva Immeasurable Body again asked the Bodhisattva Light Holder: 'Whose light is this?' The Bodhisattva Light Holder did not speak, nor did he answer. The prince of the Bodhisattva Pure Abode asked the Bodhisattva Immeasurable Body: 'For what reason and cause does this light appear among the many retinues?' The Bodhisattva Immeasurable Body also did not speak, nor did he answer. Likewise, five hundred Bodhisattvas asked each other in this way, but no one answered. Then, the Bhagavan said to Manjushri: 'Manjushri, for what reason and cause does this light appear among these many retinues?' Manjushri replied: 'Bhagavan, this light is wisdom, and what is called wisdom is a permanently abiding dharma. Since a permanently abiding dharma has no cause and condition, why does the Bhagavan ask for what reason and cause this light arose? This light is the Great Nirvana, and what is called the Great Nirvana is a permanently abiding dharma. Since a permanently abiding dharma does not arise from cause and condition, why does the Bhagavan ask for what reason and cause this light exists? This light is the Tathagata, and what is called the Tathagata is a permanently abiding dharma. Since a permanently abiding dharma does not arise from cause and condition, why does the Tathagata ask about cause and condition? This light is Maitreya.'
