Therefore, hearing this sutra will resolve doubts about words. Contemplating its meaning will resolve doubts about the meaning. Furthermore, son of good family, there are five kinds of doubts: doubting whether the Buddha will definitely enter nirvana, doubting whether the Buddha will always abide, doubting whether the Buddha is truly real, doubting whether the Buddha is completely pure, and doubting whether the Buddha is truly self. Hearing this sutra will completely resolve the doubt about the Buddha entering nirvana. Writing, reading, or reciting this sutra, or extensively explaining it to others, and contemplating its meaning, will completely resolve the remaining four doubts. Son of good family, furthermore, there are three kinds of doubts: doubting whether there are Shravakas, doubting whether there are Pratyekabuddhas, and doubting whether there are Buddhas. Merely hearing this sutra will completely eliminate these three kinds of doubts. Writing, reading, or reciting this sutra, or extensively explaining it to others, and contemplating its meaning, will lead to the realization that all sentient beings possess the Buddha-nature. Son of good family, if sentient beings have not heard this Mahaparinirvana Sutra, they will have many doubts, such as: Is it permanent or impermanent? Is it happiness or non-happiness? Is it pure or impure? Is it self or non-self? Is it life or non-life? Is it sentient being or non-sentient being? Is it ultimate or non-ultimate? Is it future time or past time? Is it existent or non-existent? Is it suffering or non-suffering? Is it arising or non-arising? Is it the path or not the path? Is it cessation or non-cessation? Is it dharma or non-dharma? Is it virtuous or non-virtuous? Is it empty or non-empty? Hearing this sutra will completely resolve all such doubts. Furthermore, son of good family, if someone has not heard this sutra, they will have many other doubts, such as: Is form self? Feeling, thought,

Are formations and consciousness the self? Or does the eye see? From when I see, can I know up to consciousness? Can I know? Does form experience ripening? From when I experience ripening, do I experience ripening up to consciousness? Do I experience ripening? Does form go to the other world? Or do I go to the other world? Similarly, consciousness is also the same. Does samsara have a beginning and an end? Or is it without beginning and end? Doubts arise. If one listens to this sutra, such doubts and so on will also be completely cut off. Furthermore, some people doubt whether those with wrong views, those who have broken the four root vows, those who have committed the five inexpiable sins, and those who slander the extensive sutras have the Buddha-nature or not. If they listen to this sutra, all those doubts will be completely cut off. Furthermore, some people doubt whether the world has an end or is endless, whether the ten directions exist or not. If they listen to this sutra, such doubts will also be completely cut off. That is called cutting off doubts and hesitation. What is called wisdom without deceit is like this: if there is doubt in the mind, then all views will not be correct. If ordinary people do not hear this sacred Mahaparinirvana Sutra, then all views will be wrong. Similarly, even among the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, all views are wrong. How are the views of ordinary people said to be wrong? They regard that which is with outflows as permanent, happy, self, and pure. They regard the Tathagata as impermanent, suffering, impure, and selfless. They believe that sentient beings, life, soul, sight, and consciousness exist. They cling to the realm of neither perception nor non-perception as Nirvana, and they believe that the Lord of Gods has the Noble Eightfold Path.
