It is not annihilation. It is not non-annihilation. It is not the beginning. It is not the end. It is not the past. It is not the future. It is not the present. It is not the aggregates. It is not the non-aggregates. It is not the sense bases. It is not the non-sense bases. It is not the elements. It is not even the non-elements. It is not the twelve links of dependent origination. It is not the non-twelve links of dependent origination. Understanding these and other such dharmas, the meaning of what is said is extremely profound, and what has not been heard before will become heard. Furthermore, what has not been heard is as follows: the four treatises in order of all the non-Buddhists, the treatise on grammar, the royal treatise, arithmetic, treatises on calculation, and so on, mantras, medicine, arts, the sun and moon being seized by Rahu, the movement and change of stars, drawings and letters, the letters of treatises on prophecy, and the secret meaning of those treatises, which have not been heard before, will now be known from this sutra. Furthermore, apart from the very extensive sutras, the extremely profound meaning that is understood and spoken from the eleven sutras, which does not exist, is now also known because of this sutra. Son of good family, this is called hearing what has not been heard. Hearing and then becoming beneficial means that if one can fully uphold this Great Nirvana Sutra, one will be able to fully understand all the essence of the meaning of the very extensive Mahayana sutras, all the profound places. For example, just as boys or girls can clearly see their shapes and appearances in a clear mirror, the mirror of the Great Nirvana is also the same. When a Bodhisattva hears it, he will clearly see the meaning of the Mahayana sutras, which is extremely profound. Furthermore, if someone lights a large lamp in a dark room, all things will be seen. The lamp of the Great Nirvana is also the same. If a Bodhisattva upholds it, he will see the profound meaning of the Great Vehicle, which is difficult to understand. Furthermore, just as when the sun rises, with its thousand rays of light, it illuminates all the dark shadows in the depths of the mountains, so that all people can see things from a distance, the completely pure light of the Great Nirvana

The sun of wisdom is also like that. The Great Vehicle illuminates the extremely profound places, and enables one to see the enlightenment of the Buddha from a greater distance than the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas. What is the reason for this? It is because they listen to and uphold the supreme Great Nirvana Sutra. Son of good family, if a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva listens to or upholds the Great Nirvana Sutra in this way, he will understand the names of all dharmas. If he writes, reads, recites, comprehends, extensively explains it to others, or contemplates its meaning, he will truly understand the meaning of all dharmas. Son of good family, one who only listens and upholds only knows the names, but does not understand the meaning itself. One who writes, memorizes, reads, recites, extensively explains it to others, or contemplates its meaning, will understand the meaning itself. Furthermore, son of good family, by listening to this sutra, one hears that there is Buddha-nature, but one cannot see it. If one writes, reads, recites, or extensively explains it to others, or contemplates its meaning, then one will see it. By merely listening to this sutra, one will obtain giving, but one will not see the perfection of giving. If one writes and recites this sutra, reads it, and extensively explains it to others, and contemplates its meaning, then one will see from the perfection of giving up to the perfection of wisdom. Son of good family, if a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva listens to this Great Nirvana Sutra, he will know the Dharma and know the meaning. If one possesses these two individual correct knowledges, then neither a Shramana, a Brahmin, a god, a demon, Brahma, nor the entire world can cause him to fear, and there will be no obstacle in distinguishing the twelve divisions of the scriptures and explaining their meaning, and without hearing from others, he will awaken himself, and he will be close to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Son of good family, this is called benefiting from hearing. The so-called cutting off the mind of doubt has two aspects: doubting the words and doubting the meaning. Listening to this sutra.
