With joy, delight, and satisfaction, that (body) then manifested in the sky, rising to the height of about seven tala trees. This three-thousandfold great thousandfold world also quaked in six ways. Great light also pervaded the world. A great rain of flowers also visibly fell from the sky above. The sounds of musical instruments and songs also arose. Then, at that time, the Blessed One smiled. The nature of the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, is that when they smile, rays of light of various colors, of various kinds, emanate from the Blessed One's face, such as blue, yellow, red, white, lapis lazuli, the color of crystal, and the color of silver. They illuminated and pervaded the boundless and limitless realms of the world with light, appearing as far as the Brahma world below, even overpowering the light of the sun and moon, and then returning, circumambulating the Blessed One three times, and disappearing into the crown of the Blessed One's head. Then, the venerable Ananda rose from his seat, draped his upper robe over one shoulder, knelt on his right knee, and, with his palms joined together towards the Blessed One, asked the Blessed One in verse about the meaning of the smile: Merit, wisdom, power, majesty, unparalleled, adorned with a fathom of light, adorned with the thirty-two excellent marks, embellished with various signs, like a lion king walking with dignity, born of the power of diligence. Why do you smile, please explain, Blessed One, please reveal your knowledge. The voice of the Able One surpasses summer clouds, the sound of drums and lion's roar cannot compare, the sound of the kalaviṅka bird and the ringing of bells, even the sound of Brahma is incomparable, among the gods, humans, and non-humans, who in the three thousand worlds is pleasant to hear? All those sounds are not equal, the Blessed One, the Able One's speech is supreme. Arhats, superior solitary realizers, and those with the mind of perfect enlightenment as well, the unparalleled Able One's wisdom, the wondrous realm is inconceivable, gods, humans, non-humans, dragons, and others, having heard, desire to seek supreme enlightenment, by the power of that wisdom, why do you show your smile, please explain. Free from all clinging, virtuous and wise
