If someone upholds this sutra, or believes in or cherishes it, or repeatedly expounds it, this is even more difficult than that. Compared to making countless millions, as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, fortunate ones with the six supernormal knowledges and Arhats rejoice, after my Nirvana, whoever upholds this supreme sutra, this supreme person, is one who acts even more diligently. For the sake of the Buddha's wisdom, in countless world realms, I have expounded extremely many teachings, and I am still expounding them. This is the most supreme Lotus Sutra of the Wonderful Dharma among all sutras. Whoever upholds this sutra, upholds the body of the Victorious One. Noble sons, in the future, whichever of you is happy to uphold this sutra, speak before the Tathagata. This sutra is extremely difficult to uphold, whoever upholds it even for a moment, for the protector of the world, has already done a great deed. The protector of the world, at all times, greatly praises this person. This person is extremely brave and capable, and quickly attains enlightenment. Whoever upholds this sutra, this person is one who carries precious jewels, is the heart-son of the protector of the world, and will also gradually attain the ground of taming. After the chief of men passes into Nirvana, whoever is skilled in expounding this sutra, for the world with gods and humans, this person is the eye. Whoever in the future age, even for a moment, expounds this sutra, that wise one is worthy of worship by all sentient beings. Then, the Bhagavan addressed the entire assembly of Bodhisattvas, and the world including gods and asuras, saying: Monks, in the past, in immeasurable countless eons, I sought everywhere for the Lotus Sutra of the Wonderful Dharma, without feeling weary or fatigued. In the past, in countless eons, for hundreds of thousands of millions of eons, I was a king, and having made the aspiration to attain unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment, my mind never wavered. In order to perfect the six paramitas, I exerted myself and gave limitless gifts, such as gold, jewels, pearls, lapis lazuli, and conch shells.

And, orpiment, coral, Śālibhadra, silver, the essence of gems, pearls, red pearls, villages, cities, towns, regions, territories, the surroundings of the king's palace, wives, sons, daughters, male servants, female servants, elephants, horses, vehicles, having completely given up my own body, hands, feet, head, limbs, and all parts, becoming a giver of life, I never gave rise to a mind of attachment. At that time, this world became long-lived, living for millions of years. At that time, I became king for the sake of the Dharma, not for the sake of the territory, but having enthroned my eldest son, I strived to seek the essence of the Dharma in the four directions. I rang a bell, saying: Whoever gives me the essence of the Dharma and explains its meaning, I will be his servant, thus I proclaimed. Then, at that time, there was a sage who said to me: Great King, there is a supreme Dharma teaching of the Sutra called the White Lotus of the Excellent Dharma, if you promise to be a servant, I will let you hear that Dharma. When I heard the words of that sage, I was very happy, my mind was exceedingly delighted, and approaching where that sage was, I said: Whatever work a servant does, I will do. Thus, I promised to be the servant of that sage, doing the work of taking grass, trees, water, roots, tubers, fruits, and so on, I even did the work of guarding the gate. Having done such work during the day, I also held the foot of the bed at night. However, my body was not tired, nor was my mind tired, and in this way, a thousand years passed. Then, the Bhagavan, in order to fully reveal this meaning, spoke these verses: Remembering the past kalpas, I was formerly a Dharma king for the sake of the Dharma. For the sake of the Dharma, I became king, not for desire, but for the sake of the essence of the Dharma. Whoever speaks the Dharma, I will be his servant, I proclaimed this in the four directions. At that time

Then there was a wise hermit, named "Holy Dharma," who expounded the Sutras. He said to me, "If you want the Dharma, promise to be my servant, and then I will teach you." Hearing this, I was very happy, and I did the work of a servant. When I was a servant for the sake of the holy Dharma, my body and mind did not feel tired. At that time, I vowed for the sake of sentient beings, not for myself, nor for desire, and without any other work, I traveled in the ten directions. I was not tired of completing a thousand kalpas. For the sake of the Sutras called "Dharma," that king made such efforts. Monks, what do you think? At that time, at that time, do you think that king was someone else? Do not look at it that way. Why? Because at that time, at that time, that king was me. Monks, at that time, at that time, do you think that hermit was someone else? Do not look at it that way. Why? Monks, Devadatta was that hermit at that time. Monks, Devadatta was also my virtuous friend. Relying on Devadatta, I perfected the six perfections. Great love, great compassion, great joy, great equanimity, as well as the thirty-two marks of a great man, the eighty minor marks, the light of a fathom, the color of gold, the ten powers, the four fearlessnesses, the four objects of gathering, the eighteen unshared dharmas of the Buddha, and the great power of miracles, saving sentient beings in the ten directions, all of these were perfected by relying on Devadatta. Monks, you should believe and understand. Monks, this Devadatta, in the immeasurable and countless kalpas of the future, in the world called "Heavenly Ladder," will become the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened Buddha, named "Heavenly King." Monks, the lifespan of that Tathagata Heavenly King will be twenty intermediate kalpas. He will also widely propagate the Dharma. Sentient beings as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River will be freed from afflictions.
