Eleventh Chapter: Displaying the Stupa Eleventh Chapter: Displaying the Stupa Eighth Volume: Then, in front of the Bhagavan, from the midst of the assembly in that place, a stupa made of the seven precious substances appeared. Its height was five hundred yojanas, and its circumference was in proportion to that. It was adorned with five thousand well-arranged platforms strewn with flowers, beautiful to behold, decorated with thousands upon thousands of horse stables, adorned with thousands of divine banners and victory banners, hung with thousands of precious garlands, and hung with thousands of silk cloths and bells. It manifested and remained in the space of the sky, and the fragrance of Tamala leaves and sandalwood arose, and that fragrance pervaded this world system, which is endowed with everything. The garland of its parasol rose up to the palaces of the Four Great Kings. This was made of the seven precious substances, namely: gold, silver, vaidurya, conch shell, essence of stone, red pearl, and coral. The sons of the Thirty-three Gods scattered divine Mandarava flowers and great Mandarava flowers upon the precious stupa, scattering them completely and thoroughly. From that precious stupa, a sound like this arose: "The Tathagatas have no mind, no realization, and all conduct is also shown. The Tathagatas are not separated from the skandhas, dhatus, and ayatanas, nor do they arise from karma, afflictions, parents, or the great elements. They are not related to flesh, blood, or fluids, nor are they closely related to the breath that goes in and out, or to life. The Tathagatas are like the sky, neither permanent nor impermanent. However, the Tathagatas are precious, having completely passed into nirvana for many billions of hundreds of thousands of kotis of kalpas, free from all thoughts and discriminations. For the sake of sentient beings, they appear by the power of past aspirations, in order to hear the Dharma and to ripen sentient beings. There is not even a little thought in the body of the Tathagata."

The Tathagatas did not utter even a single word. The assembled beings, with their respective faculties and inclinations, listened to the Dharma discourse of the Tathagata. The Tathagata is Suchness, Suchness is the ultimate reality, and the ultimate reality is the realm of Dharma. Suchness, the ultimate reality, and the realm of Dharma are the categories of the Dharma of the White Lotus of the Sacred Dharma. Thus, when do these perfectly pure Tathagatas pass away, appear, and speak? By the power of past aspirations, for the beings whose minds are completely pure, they revealed the categories of the Dharma of the White Lotus of the Sacred Dharma, the great skillful means. Again, these two sounds arose from the precious stupa: "Blessed One, Shakyamuni Buddha, you have well spoken this category of Dharma called the White Lotus of the Sacred Dharma, excellent, excellent! Blessed One, it is so! Sugata, it is so!" Such sounds arose. Then, those four assemblies saw the great precious stupa standing in the sky, and they felt joy, satisfaction, happiness, and extreme delight. At that time, they arose from their seats, joined their palms, and stood. Then, at that time, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Great Courage, realizing that the world, including gods, humans, and asuras, was amazed, said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, what are the cause and condition for the appearance of such a great precious stupa? Blessed One, who is it that utters such a sound from this great precious stupa?" After he had spoken thus, the Blessed One said to the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Great Courage: "Great Courage, within this great precious stupa resides the assembled body of a Tathagata. This is his stupa, and he uttered this sound. Great Courage, to the east, beyond countless thousands of world realms, there is a world realm called Pure Jewel."

The matter is this: There appeared a Tathagata, Arhat, Samyak-sambuddha named Ratna-samcaya. That Bhagavan made this aspiration: When I was practicing the conduct of a Bodhisattva in the past, as long as I have not heard this Dharma discourse called the White Lotus Sutra of the Good Dharma, I will not attain the unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment. When I hear this Dharma discourse called the White Lotus Sutra of the Good Dharma, immediately after that, may I completely accomplish the unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment. Great Courage, that Bhagavan, Tathagata, Arhat, Samyak-sambuddha Ratna-samcaya, at the time of completely passing into Nirvana, in front of the world including the gods, said this: O monks, after I completely pass into Nirvana, build a great precious stupa of the Tathagata's body image, and the remaining stupas should be built for me. Great Courage, that Bhagavan, Tathagata, Arhat, Samyak-sambuddha Ratna-samcaya said: This stupa of mine, in all the Buddha-fields of the ten directions, wherever this Dharma discourse called the White Lotus Sutra of the Good Dharma is correctly and thoroughly taught, this stupa of my body image will appear there. When those Buddhas, the Bhagavans, teach this Dharma discourse called the White Lotus Sutra of the Good Dharma, my body image will sit in the sky above the mandala of the retinue, and my body image will praise those Buddhas, the Bhagavans, who teach this Dharma discourse called the White Lotus Sutra of the Good Dharma, saying: Excellent! Thus it was blessed. Great Courage, therefore, this stupa of the relics of that Bhagavan, Tathagata, Arhat, Samyak-sambuddha Ratna-samcaya, when I teach this Dharma discourse called the White Lotus Sutra of the Good Dharma in this Saha world, it appears from the center of this mandala of the retinue,
