and wisdom, and liberation, and the wisdom vision of liberation, and loving-kindness, and compassion, and joy, and equanimity, and conduct, and actions, and practice, even from these aspects one should recollect the Tathagata, what need is there to mention all the qualities of the Buddha? Ananda, in whatever ways one recollects the Tathagata, those ways have great miracles, great benefits, great splendor, great vastness. Like nectar, filled with nectar, exhausted by nectar. Ananda, the qualities of the generosity paramita that existed in my continuum when I was previously a Bodhisattva, even with the wisdom of a Buddha, I cannot fully comprehend, what need is there to mention my discipline paramita, patience paramita, diligence paramita, concentration paramita, and wisdom paramita? What need is there to mention other qualities of a Bodhisattva? When I was not prophesied to be the unexcelled, perfect, complete enlightenment, even the limit of the qualities that a Bodhisattva possessed was not easy for me to comprehend with the wisdom of a Buddha, what need is there to mention after being prophesied? What need is there to mention all the qualities of a Buddha? The limit of those qualities is not easy to comprehend even in hundreds of thousands of billions of eons. Why is that? Because the qualities of the Tathagata, Arhat, perfectly complete Buddha are immeasurable. Ananda, having seen this power of meaning, if some people recollect the qualities of my Bodhisattva conduct and also generate joy, Ananda, the result of all those roots of virtue is Nirvana, ultimately I speak of it as Nirvana. Ananda, therefore do not grieve, do not lament. Ananda, I have already done great things for you and the world including the gods, I have bestowed great benefits. I have shown the path to attain the unexcelled accomplishment and happiness, that is, the path to attain Nirvana, I have explained the method of practice, now you should strive in mindfulness.

Do it! Then, the Blessed One addressed the fully endowed community of monks, saying: Monks, at midnight tonight, the Thus-Gone One will pass into complete nirvana. Monks, come here! Today will be the last time I see you, and the last time I teach. Today, our meeting will be the last time we see each other, and the last time we meet. Monks, you will not see me again, and I will not see you again. Therefore, monks, do not grieve, do not lament! Monks, all that is dear and pleasing will change, will separate, will depart, will disperse. Monks, whatever is born, produced, examined, fabricated, contemplated, arising in dependence, having the nature of utter destruction, where is there a place where these things will not be destroyed? There is no such place. Monks, however long one lives, one must surely go to the next life. Monks, there is no one born who does not die. For those things that have become conditioned, there is no permanence, no stability, no solidity, no unchanging nature. Monks, birth and death are suffering. Monks, those who have completely passed into nirvana are happy. Strive to attain what has not been attained, to realize what has not been realized, to manifest what has not been manifested! Exert yourselves! Be diligent! Monks, the unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment of the Buddha, the Blessed One, and all other virtuous aspects of enlightenment, are attained through mindfulness. Monks, be diligent in mindfulness! Monks, this is my final teaching to you. At that time, in that assembly, there were monks, nuns, laymen, laywomen, gods, nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, Indra, Brahma, and world-protectors, as many as had gathered. Having heard this advice and teaching from the Blessed One, they were saddened and displeased, filled with the utmost sorrow and displeasure. Grief
