It should be abandoned. Mahamati, the Dharma taught by the Tathagatas is not related to self-nature, faculties, causelessness, autonomy, atoms, time, or essence. Mahamati, furthermore, in order to completely purify the two obscurations, the afflictive obscuration and the cognitive obscuration, one establishes one hundred and eight aspects of having no guide, vehicles, and the characteristics of extremely differentiated branches of the grounds, as the ultimate ground. Mahamati, furthermore, there are four kinds of dhyana. What are the four? They are: the dhyana practiced by fools, the dhyana of discriminating meaning, the dhyana focused on Suchness, and the Tathagata dhyana. Mahamati, what is the dhyana practiced by fools? It is like this: the yogis of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, regarding the selflessness of persons, and the characteristics of self and general forms of things, skeletons, impermanence, suffering, and impurity, first clinging to them, thinking that this is such a characteristic, and not otherwise. Observing in this way, from the beginning to higher and higher, until the cessation of perception, this is the practice of fools. Mahamati, what is the dhyana of discriminating meaning? It is like this: regarding the selflessness of persons and the characteristics of self and general forms, and the external heretics and the non-existence of both self and other, thus discriminating the meaning of the characteristics of the ground of the selflessness of phenomena in order, this is the dhyana of discriminating meaning. Mahamati, what is the dhyana focused on Suchness? It is like this: in the aspects of the two kinds of non-self-existence, not thinking, abiding as it is in reality, therefore no discrimination arises, hence it is said to be focused on Suchness. Mahamati, what is the Tathagata dhyana? It is like this: entering into the aspect of the Tathagata ground, the noble ones each abide in the bliss of the three characteristics of their own wisdom, thereby doing inconceivable benefit to sentient beings, hence it is called the Tathagata dhyana.

The explanation of the ground is complete. Regarding this, it should be said as follows: The meditation of excellent discrimination of meaning, the meditation of children's near practice, the meditation of suchness as the object, the virtuous meditation of the Thus-gone One. If a yogi exerts effort, he will see shapes like the sun and moon, like light and lotuses, like patterns and fire in the sky. Those various signs lead to the wrong paths of non-Buddhists and also cause one to fall into the realm of practice of Hearers and Solitary Realizers. When all these are completely abandoned and become without appearance, then the hands of the Buddhas and gods, arising from all realms, touch his head, which is a sign of truly following. Then again, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Great Wisdom asked the Bhagavan: "Bhagavan, Nirvana, Nirvana, what is Nirvana? Nirvana, what dharma is this term for?" The Bhagavan replied: "The Alaya, the habitual tendencies of the nature of all consciousness, and the intense habitual tendencies of the views of mind and mind-consciousness, are the manner of Nirvana, and the realm of objects of the nature of emptiness, Nirvana, as the Buddhas and I say. Furthermore, Great Wisdom, Nirvana is the realm of wisdom that each noble one knows for himself, abandoning the discriminations of permanence and annihilation, and the discriminations of existence and non-existence. How is it not permanent? It is like this: by abandoning the discriminations of self and general characteristics, therefore it is not permanent. Why is it not annihilation? It is like this: all the noble ones who have arisen in the past, future, and present each realize it for themselves, therefore it is not annihilation. Great Wisdom, furthermore, complete Nirvana is not destruction, nor is it death. Great Wisdom, if complete Nirvana were death, then it would still become a cause of birth, and if it were destruction, it would also fall into the nature of conditioned phenomena. Great Wisdom, therefore, complete

Nirvana is not destruction, not death, because yogis realize the refuge that is free from death and rebirth. Mahamati, furthermore, nirvana is not without abandonment, not without attainment, not annihilation, not permanence, not one meaning, not different meanings, therefore it is called nirvana. Mahamati, furthermore, the nirvana of hearers and solitary buddhas is the understanding of self-characteristics and general characteristics, without clamor, seeing objects as they are without perversion, not arising with discriminating thoughts, therefore, they generate wisdom of nirvana. Mahamati, furthermore, there are two kinds of characteristics of self-nature, what are the two? That is, attachment to the self-nature of language and attachment to the self-nature of things. Mahamati, attachment to the self-nature of language arises from attachment to the habitual tendencies of linguistic elaboration from beginningless time. Mahamati, attachment to the self-nature of things arises from not understanding that one's own mind is merely an appearance. Mahamati, furthermore, bodhisattvas who are blessed by two blessings approach and inquire of the Tathagata Arhat Samyaksambuddhas. What are the two blessings that bless? That is, the blessing of the blessing of entering into samadhi, and the blessing of empowerment by all of body, face, and hands. Mahamati, bodhisattva mahasattvas, from the first bhumi, after being blessed by the blessing of the Buddha, enter into the samadhi called the Great Vehicle Manifestation of Bodhisattva, as soon as the bodhisattva mahasattvas enter into the samadhi called the Great Vehicle Manifestation of Bodhisattva, the Tathagata Arhat Samyaksambuddhas residing in the ten directions of the world appear, body
