How many ways does the mind of one engaged in Śamatha and Vipaśyanā become distracted? The Buddha said: Maitreya, by five ways. Namely: distraction of attention, distraction of mind to external objects, distraction of mind to internal objects, distraction of signs, and distraction of bad states. Maitreya, if a Bodhisattva abandons the attention associated with the Great Vehicle and falls into the attention associated with Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas, that is distraction of attention. If the mind is scattered outwards to the five desirable qualities of external objects, as well as to noise, signs, discriminations, afflictions, near afflictions, and external objects of focus, that is distraction of mind to external objects. If one is overwhelmed by dullness and sleep, or tastes the flavor of samādhi, or is afflicted by any near affliction of samādhi, that is distraction of mind to internal objects. If, relying on external signs, one attends to the signs of the internal realm of samādhi, that is distraction of signs. If, relying on internal attention, one conceives a sense of "I" with the body of a bad state towards the feeling that arises, that is distraction of bad states. Bhagavan, what are the antidotes to Śamatha and Vipaśyanā from the first Bodhisattva ground up to the Tathāgata ground? Maitreya, Śamatha and Vipaśyanā, for the first ground, are the antidotes to the afflictions of bad destinies and the afflictions of karma and birth. For the second ground, they are the antidotes to the pervasive arising of subtle transgressions. For the third ground, they are the antidotes to desire for desire. For the fourth ground, they are the antidotes to craving for samādhi and craving for dharma. For the fifth ground, they are the antidotes to not being biased towards either saṃsāra or nirvāṇa, and to the manifestation of being biased towards one. For the sixth ground, they are the antidotes to the pervasive arising of many signs. For the seventh ground, they are the antidotes to the pervasive arising of subtle signs. For the eighth ground, they are the antidotes to effort in the absence of signs and to not having mastery over signs. For the ninth

The tenth, in all aspects, does not become the master of teaching the Dharma. The tenth, regarding the complete Dharmakaya, also does not attain perfect knowledge individually. Maitreya, calm abiding and insight, in the realm of the Tathagatas, are the antidotes to the obscurations of afflictions and the obscurations of knowledge, which are extremely subtle and supremely subtle. Having well subdued these, one obtains wisdom that is without attachment to all and without obstruction, as well as vision, and dwells in the extremely pure Dharmakaya with the object of focus that completely accomplishes what is needed. World-Honored One, how should a Bodhisattva cultivate calm abiding and insight in order to manifestly awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment and become a Buddha? The World-Honored One said: Maitreya, here, after a Bodhisattva has obtained calm abiding and insight, beginning with the seven kinds of suchness, the Dharmas that are heard and contemplated are grasped by a mind in equipoise, and the suchness that is well contemplated and well held in equipoise is mentally engaged within. When suchness is mentally engaged in this way, for all the subtle signs that arise, one should temporarily place the mind in extreme equanimity; what need is there to mention the gross ones? Maitreya, these are the subtle signs: the sign of the mind's grasping, or the sign of experiencing, or the sign of discriminating, or the sign of complete defilement and complete purification, or the internal sign, or the external sign, or the sign of both, or the sign of thinking that one should act for the benefit of all sentient beings, or the sign of knowing, or suchness, or suffering, or origin, or cessation, or the sign of the path, or the sign of the conditioned, or the sign of the unconditioned, or the sign of permanence, or the sign of impermanence, or the sign of the nature of suffering and change, or the sign of the nature of that which does not change, or the sign of the difference in the characteristics of the conditioned, or the sign of its own characteristic, knowing all as all, or the sign of all, or the sign of the absence of a self of a person, or whatever is the sign of the absence of a self of phenomena; when these arise, one places the mind in extreme equanimity. Having entered into it in this way, it
