causing them to have faith, causing them to correctly grasp, and correctly praising them, what need is there to mention even teaching a four-line verse? Son of Sharadvati, I do not say that that accumulation of merit will be exhausted or completely depleted in the intermediate state, except for the great Nirvana. Then, the venerable son of Sharadvati said this to the Blessed One: Blessed One, if a son or daughter of good family who, with Dharma-related speech, makes a Bodhisattva Mahasattva rejoice, and causes them to correctly grasp, and correctly praises them, Blessed One, will accumulate such an accumulation of merit. Blessed One, if a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, endowed with the mind of enlightenment, wishes to enter the city of the Buddhadharma, but is turned away, made to be distracted, and obstructed, Blessed One, what will that become? Blessed One, please show that situation. What is the reason for that? Blessed One, so that those beings who have entered for the sake of obstructing the Bodhisattvas, having heard this, will recognize their faults as faults, and so that all those who are about to enter and those who are entering, having heard this, will do so for the sake of confessing their faults to the Blessed One. Having said this, the Blessed One said this to the venerable son of Sharadvati: Son of Sharadvati, whoever enters for the sake of obstructing a Bodhisattva, turns away their faith, makes them distracted, and obstructs them, will become endowed with an accumulation of non-merit. Son of Sharadvati, it is like this: for example, whoever obstructs a great priceless jewel, obstructs a great accumulation of wealth. Son of Sharadvati, similarly, whoever obstructs the mind of enlightenment of a Bodhisattva once arising, obstructs countless immeasurable accumulations of the Dharma Jewel. Son of Sharadvati, it is like this: for example, whoever obstructs the growth of a medicinal tree, and enters for the purpose of withering it

That is, Shariputra! It obstructs many immeasurable sentient beings tormented by diseases, because those sentient beings die without being liberated from that great disease. Shariputra! Similarly, whoever obstructs the generation of the Bodhi mind, the unequaled mind, the mind of benefit and happiness, the medicine of generating the mind that eliminates all the afflictive diseases of sentient beings, that is, Shariputra! It obstructs countless immeasurable sentient beings, completely tormented by the diseases of desire, hatred, and ignorance, filled with great diseases of jealousy, stinginess, anger, deceit, pretense, contention, shamelessness, arrogance, wrongdoing, haughtiness, recklessness, pride, and excessive pride, those who approach great Nirvana, peace, health, and coolness, obstructing the pacification of great diseases (Bodhi mind). Shariputra! For example, entering to obstruct a place that is not hot, and also entering to obstruct the great Naga king, that, Shariputra! Know that it is to pacify the suffering of craving of many two-legged and four-legged beings, entering to obstruct the water that possesses eight qualities. Shariputra! Similarly, whoever obstructs the generation of the Bodhi mind of some Bodhisattvas, That is, Shariputra! Know that it obstructs countless immeasurable, completely cutting off all cravings, the stream of Dharma possessing eight qualities. Shariputra! For example, whoever enters to obstruct the orb of the sun, that, Shariputra! Know that it is to make the great light of those sentient beings abiding in the four continents not appear. Shariputra! Similarly, whoever obstructs the arising of the Bodhi mind, obstructing the abiding of the light of the Dharma, and those sentient beings who obstruct and do not obstruct, that is, Shariputra! The three thousand great thousand worlds.

Now, it should be understood that whatever hinders the great manifestation of Dharma and the great clarity of Dharma for sentient beings is like that. Shariputra, for example, if someone destroys the source of all jewels, Shariputra, it should be understood that this person dwells nearby in order to prevent countless immeasurable sentient beings from obtaining jewels. Shariputra, similarly, if someone acts in order to make the Bodhisattva's aspiration, the great aspiration, the aspiration of the Buddha's wisdom disappear, Shariputra, it should be understood that this person has entered the wrong path in order to destroy the Dharma treasure gathered by countless immeasurable sentient beings. Shariputra, for example, the source of all jewels, all jewels arise from it. Shariputra, similarly, the Bodhisattva's aspiration is the source of all jewels, and all the Buddha's Dharma treasures arise from it. Shariputra, therefore, whoever acts to make the Bodhisattva's aspiration disappear possesses a great collection of non-merit. Shariputra, for example, if someone now generates the thought of drawing blood from me with malice, and someone prevents a Bodhisattva from having faith in Bodhicitta and hinders it, these two are the same. Shariputra, let alone generating the thought of drawing blood from me! Shariputra, I have said that the five inexpiable sins are very difficult to endure, difficult to liberate from, and difficult to determine, but even so, that son of good family or daughter of good family accumulates an even greater collection of non-merit. Why is that? Shariputra, committing the five inexpiable sins does not hinder any of the Buddha's Dharma, but destroying the Bodhisattva's aspiration destroys all of the Buddha's Dharma. Shariputra, for example, killing a cow leads to no milk.
