This is the first part of the Blessed One's teaching on the increase of wisdom. Listen to its explanation. Householder, how does the Thus-Gone One truly know the place? Householder, the Thus-Gone One knows in this way: The result of bodily misconduct, the achievement of what is undesirable, ugly, and unlovely, that is the place and the occasion. The result of verbal misconduct and mental misconduct, the achievement of what is undesirable, ugly, and unlovely, that is also the place and the occasion. By bodily misconduct, after the body breaks down at death, one is born in the bad realms, the bad destinies, the places of downfall, in the hells of sentient beings, that is also the place and the occasion. The result of verbal misconduct and mental misconduct, after the body breaks down at death, one is born in the bad realms, the bad destinies, the places of downfall, in the hells of sentient beings, that is also the place and the occasion. The result of bodily good conduct, the achievement of what is desirable, beautiful, and lovely, that is also the place and the occasion. The result of verbal good conduct and mental good conduct, the manifest achievement of what is desirable, beautiful, and lovely, that is also the place and the occasion. By the result of bodily good conduct, after the body breaks down at death, one is born in the good realms, the heavenly worlds, that is also the place and the occasion. The result of verbal good conduct and mental good conduct, after the body breaks down at death, one is born in the good realms, the heavenly worlds, that is also the place and the occasion. Here, some ordinary person intentionally takes the life of their mother, that is also the place and the occasion. Here, some ordinary person intentionally takes the life of their father, that is also the place and the occasion. Whatever distinguishes agreement and disagreement is also place and occasion. Here, some ordinary beings draw blood from the Tathagata with malicious intent, which is also a place and occasion. Here, some ordinary beings adhere to the teachings of other teachers, as well as the correct views and precepts of other outsiders, and cause others to correctly accept other practices, and for any Shramanas and Brahmins, they completely seek many merits and auspiciousness with their respective truths, and incline to the words spoken by other Shramanas and Brahmins. Long-lived ones, it should be known that this is what should be known, and it should be seen that this is what should be seen, which is also a place and occasion. Here, some ordinary beings are able to achieve the eight human states, which is also a place and occasion. Here, some individuals cultivate Brahma, or cultivate Mara or Brahmin, which is also a place and occasion. Here, some individuals become Chakravartin kings, which is also a place and occasion. Here, some individuals become Tathagatas, Arhats, perfectly enlightened Buddhas, which is also a place and occasion. In one world, one Tathagata appears, which is also a place and occasion. Householder, therefore, the Tathagata fully knows the knowledge of place.
