went to the place of birth. Whatever you hear that makes you happy, tell me with words of investigation. He said: In a previous existence, I participated in teaching and listening to the Dharma, and I harassed the Dharma speaker. Therefore, I went to the realm of animals. He said: I have stayed here for a long time, and now I am leaving. Please be patient for a little while, drink water and eat grass. Do not let time pass in vain. He said: I have not come here for food and drink. I do not want grass, nor do I want to be preached to. Please look at me, do not abandon me, do not leave, and let the Brahmin stay in this grove. He said: Where is there any form of food? Likewise, there is no form of drink or dwelling place. How can a Brahmin stay in this grove? He said: Ascetic, there is no food that you have asked for, nor are there drinks or sesame seeds. There is no rice, no bedding, and no cushions for me. Therefore, I should give myself to the ascetic. May the ascetic enjoy me with great joy. Having found joy in seeing the Dharma, enjoy me and enter my grove. To awaken him, he spoke these words: You will eat me today and dwell in this grove. You yourself seize yourself and give yourself to me. If you eat me, I will happily dwell here. He said: Without regard for the body, put me in the fire and enjoy me today. Immediately after death, the mind will be joyful, and I will joyfully meet with the wise ones. To awaken him, the ascetic gathered grass and wood there, lit a fire, and said to the rabbit: Burn, and I will dwell in this grove. Seeing the burning fire, the rabbit, like entering cool pond water, generated great faith and entered the flames without any hesitation. The ascetic rejoiced in the rabbit, lovingly protected it, and seized it, saying, "May you dwell in this grove until the end of the kalpa. I will dwell in this grove to benefit you." The ascetic dwelt in that grove, giving the rabbit teachings of benefit, performing countless virtuous deeds, ascending to the heavens, and there obtaining happiness. How is Maudgalyayana's son

Maudgalyayana, what do you think? Do you think that the one who became a rabbit at that time was someone else? You should not see it that way. I became a rabbit at that time. Maudgalyayana, what do you think? Do you think that the one who became a hermit at that time was someone else? You should not see it that way. At that time, Shariputra became a hermit. He and I attained the knowledge of karma through that root of virtue. Maudgalyayana, therefore, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who wishes to attain unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment should train in the knowledge of karma, and those karmas should not be mixed up, otherwise they should be dedicated to unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment. Maudgalyayana, thus should a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva fully understand the knowledge of karma. Maudgalyayana, for the purpose of understanding the arising of the knowledge of karma, when I was practicing the conduct of a Bodhisattva in the past, I accumulated immeasurable roots of virtue, and I also gave away what was difficult to give away, and I also did what was difficult to do. Maudgalyayana, in the past, countless eons ago, far beyond that, there was a Dharma King who possessed Dharma, a universal monarch with a single umbrella, the lord of the lands, a king named Ashoka Shri. At that time, the Tathagata Subduer of Mara's Power appeared in the world. The community of Shravakas of the Blessed One, the Tathagata Subduer of Mara's Power, consisted of nine hundred billion Arhats who had exhausted the defilements. Then, the Tathagata Subduer of Mara's Power, sitting in the center of those nine hundred billion Shravakas, began to teach the Dharma to the Shravakas, starting with the understanding of the arising of the knowledge of karma. At that time, in that very assembly, there was a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva named Dispeller of Sorrow gathered there. He rose from his seat, bared one shoulder, knelt on his right knee, and bowed with folded hands in the direction of the Blessed One, the Tathagata Subduer of Mara's Power.
