Then (the king) thought: How well this verse is spoken, it is truly wonderful! For the sake of the meaning of this verse, I am willing to give away bodies as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River. Even having given those away, I would still want to obtain this verse. Thinking this, he stood up from his seat, with his left hand holding his wife and his right hand holding his son, and said to the flesh-eater: This verse will accomplish great things for me, use it as you please. Maudgalyayana, then that flesh-eater made that form disappear and revealed his true form, and then said the verse to King Shakra-given: Hero of generosity, well done, well done! You have destroyed the sin of stinginess, you hold onto various forms of giving, may your wishes be fulfilled! After that, King Shakra-given said to that great being: Friend, who are you? He said: Friend, I am Indra, the lord of the gods. Great king, whatever supreme thing you desire, ask for it now. After that, King Shakra-given said this: Lord of the gods, if you are truly going to grant a supreme thing, please grant me that supreme thing which is without birth, without old age, without sickness, without death, without sorrow, without lamentation, without suffering, without displeasure, and without confusion! He said to him: Great king, I have no power to do these things, only the Blessed One, the Buddha, possesses this supreme thing. Ask for whatever other supreme thing you desire. After that, King Shakra-given said this to Indra, the lord of the gods: Even the powerful are powerless, even children see this. Indra, you are as dejected as an elephant sinking into the mud. Maudgalyayana, at that time, if you think that the king named Shakra-given was another person, you should not look at it that way, because at that time, the one who became the king named Shakra-given was him. Maudgalyayana, with that root of virtue, he attained the wisdom that can prevent me from knowing the path by which I now appear. Maudgalyayana, therefore, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva is unsurpassed and perfectly complete.

Wishing to fully awaken to perfect and complete enlightenment, and desiring to attain the path of knowledge that prevents knowing what is happening now, I should learn to completely abandon everything. Giving should be done without expectation. Fourteenth fascicle. Maudgalyayana, in order to understand me, practiced immeasurable joys, and also abandoned immeasurable things that were difficult to abandon. Maudgalyayana, in the far beyond of countless eons in the past, there was a Brahmin named Bharadvaja, who shared the same lineage as me. He went to sit under another tree. At that time, a great untimely cloud appeared and immediately rained. Then, the Brahmin Bharadvaja, who shared the same lineage as me, was rained on for seven days under that tree. He stayed there without eating, just sitting. At that time, in the crevice of that tree's trunk, lived a rabbit with excellent qualities. That rabbit came out of the tree crevice and licked the feet of the Brahmin Bharadvaja, who shared the same lineage as me, with its tongue. Then, the Brahmin Bharadvaja, who shared the same lineage as me, took that rabbit into his arms and held it for seven days, and also stroked its body with his hands. He looked at it with loving-kindness, and with bodily actions, he truly caressed it. He caressed it with loving bodily actions, and with loving speech and loving thoughts, he fully described it. At that time, he spoke these verses: It is good that the rabbit lives in the forest grove! Possessing Dharma and delighting in Dharma, relying on the guru. For what reason do you live in this forest grove? Please answer well the questions I ask. Are you not afraid to live with me? Furthermore, do you not have hunger and thirst? When you eat on the soft grass, by what means does your body live in the forest? It said: Brahmin of men, please listen to me. Please look at the Dharma practice in this forest. I do not seek drinks and grass. I look at the upright person and rejoice together. Seeing the one who possesses Dharma, I practice discipline and asceticism. I obtain joy in that peaceful world. What karma did you do to come to the human realm? And why did you become an animal?
