The earth goddess said: Overcoming intelligence with the power of wrath, desiring the heavenly realm, abiding with the thought that I am permanent or impermanent, abiding with the thought that liberation comes from going elsewhere, not knowing the upright ones, practicing asceticism by going ahead. Those who are separated from the true meaning, yet call themselves men. Some say pervasive, some say unique, some say supreme, and some say permanent. Some say having a body, some say without a body, some say without qualities, and some say with qualities. Some say the doer, some say not the doer, others say so. Sitting on this cushion, having conquered arrogance and leading the army, you have defeated me, and now you have obtained the stainless Bodhi. For these beings, arising, having arisen, and passing into nirvana, I will show the cool substance that pacifies suffering. The Mara became angry and agitated, gnashing his teeth, and spoke harsh words in front: Seize this Shramana! This one who has been abandoned alone in the solitary place, seize him from my presence and quickly control him! Quickly return to my house, put on wooden and iron shackles, and make him the gatekeeper! Suffering approached, uttering various cries, and I considered myself to be a servant of the gods. The Bodhisattva said: In the sky, it might be possible to divide various kinds of drawings into parts and stripes, and draw them separately. Perhaps people could try their best to bind the strong winds that travel in all directions with ropes. Perhaps it is possible to make the sun and moon, which eliminate darkness and dimness, fall from the sky to the earth. Even countless people like you cannot move me from under the tree. The powerful Mara army stood up and said "Ha!" They blew conches, drums, and the best clay drums. Seeing these extremely frightening Mara armies, they said: Alas, poor child, why have you become disobedient? Golden like Jambudvipa gold and the pistil of champak flowers, very young, worthy of praise and offerings from gods. Today you will be completely destroyed in the great battle, and like Indra to the Asuras, you will become a slave of Mara. With the voice of Brahma and the call of Kalavinka, the Sugata spoke to the Yaksha and Rakshasa assembly: What foolish person wants to frighten the sky? That person wants to awaken someone like me from under the best tree.
