O Three Jewels, for the suffering and helpless, after doing so, will you not pass away in this monastery? How wonderful! The essence of beings, steadfast in vows, O Protector, you previously invited us to Tushita, for the sake of sacred Dharma offerings and feasts. O beings, what was your vow? Then that deity went to the abode of the thirty-three gods and told the goddess Maya that the youth was about to die, and spoke of this matter. Then the goddess Maya, surrounded by a retinue of goddesses, went around midnight to the bank of the Nairanjana River, to where the Bodhisattva was, and she saw the Bodhisattva emaciated and appearing to be dying. Having seen this, she was filled with tears and wept. At that time, she spoke these verses: In the garden called Lumbini, when I gave birth to you, like a lion, without fear, you yourself took seven steps. Looking in the four directions, saying, "This is my last birth," those sweet words you spoke, have not come to fruition for you. The sage Asita had prophesied that the world would become a Buddha, that prophecy has also failed, impermanence has not seen it. The son has not enjoyed the delight of the glory of a Chakravartin, nor has he attained enlightenment, but has ended in death. For the sake of the son, for whom to practice, to whom to entrust the suffering? My only son, who will give him a single breath of life? The Bodhisattva said: Crying with great pity, hair disheveled, abandoning beauty, uttering lamentations for her son with great sorrow, sitting on the ground, standing, who is this? The goddess Maya said: For ten months, I carried in my womb a vajra-like child. I am the mother of that son, uttering cries of extreme suffering. Then the Bodhisattva, breathing in the mother's breath, said: O you who are loving towards your son, your labor has borne fruit, do not fear! Abandoning completely for the sake of becoming a Buddha is meaningful, the prophecy of the sage Asita will also become manifest, the prophecy of Dipankara will also become manifest, even if the earth were to be shattered into a hundred pieces, the precious Mount Meru might float in the water, the sun and moon

The stars might fall to the earth, but even as a common person, I will not die. Therefore, you should not grieve over this; before long, you will see the Bodhi Buddha. The goddess of illusion, upon hearing this, was overjoyed, her hairs stood on end, and she scattered Mandarava flowers upon the Bodhisattva, circumambulated him three times, played celestial music, and returned to her abode. Monks, I thought to myself: Some ascetics and Brahmins believe that purity can be attained through meager food, so I too should diligently practice consuming meager food. Monks, I realized that I ate only one mustard seed, and nothing else. Monks, if you think that the mustard seed at that time was large, do not think so; the mustard seed at that time was just this size. Monks, because I ate only one mustard seed, and nothing else, my body became extremely weak and emaciated. Monks, just as the joints of a young Astaka stalk and a Kalika stalk are, so too were my limbs and minor limbs. Just as the ribs of the animal Karkataka are, so too were my ribs. Just as an old chariot shed or an elephant shed, with both sides broken, reveals the space between the supporting pillars, so too, from both sides of my ribs, the inside of my body was visible and apparent. Just as a bamboo fence is uneven, so too were my vertebrae uneven. Just as a young gourd that has been cut becomes withered, completely withered, and rough, so too did my head become withered, completely withered, and rough. Just as in the last month of summer, the Kṛttikā star sinks low and is difficult to see, so too did the pupils of my eyes sink into their sockets and become difficult to see. Just as my legs or shins were, so too were my armpits, abdomen, chest, and so on.
