It became like that. Monks, then I thought, when will I touch my stomach with my hand, but I touched my spine. I thought I would stand up, but when I stood up, I fell down hunched over. I struggled to get up, wiped the dust off my body with my hands, and all the rotten hairs fell off my body. I used to be beautiful and soft in color, but now it has disappeared because of this harsh self-mortification. The idlers in the village where I lived also said to me: 'Oh, this Shramana Gautama is so black!' 'Oh, this Shramana Gautama is so blue!' 'Oh, this Shramana Gautama's color is like a dead fish!' They knew that my beautiful and bright color had disappeared. Monks, thinking like this, I thought I should try harder to reduce food. Monks, I knew clearly that I only ate one grain of rice, there was no second. Monks, you may think that the rice grain was big at that time, but don't look at it that way, the rice grain at that time was only this big. Monks, I ate only one grain of rice, The body quickly returned to its former state, until they said, 'Oh, this Shramana Gautama's color is like a dead fish!' They knew that my beautiful and bright color had disappeared. Monks, thinking like this, I thought I should try harder to reduce food. Monks, I knew clearly that I only ate one sesame seed, there was no second, until my soft color disappeared. Monks, I thought to myself, some Shramanas and Brahmins think that they can be purified by not eating, and I should also try my best not to eat anything at all. Monks, from then on I stopped eating. Monks, because I didn't eat, my body became very thin, weak and haggard. Like the joints of the Astaka tree and the joints of the Kalika tree, my limbs and

The body became emaciated. Like this, the ribs were like the ribs of the animal Karkataka, and like a riding stable. The vertebrae were like strung beads. The skull was like a bitter gourd. The pupils of the eyes were like stars in a well. Monks, thinking that I could stand up well, I moved my body, but I became hunched over and fell. When I got up, my body was covered in dust, and when I wiped it with my hands, all the rotten hair fell from my body. Formerly, my complexion was beautiful and smooth, but now, because of abandoning myself in this way and engaging in harsh practices, it has disappeared. The people living near my place of practice in the village also said, 'Alas, the ascetic Gautama has become dark! Alas, the ascetic Gautama has become blue-green! Alas, the ascetic Gautama's color is like the fish Mangura!' They knew, 'Formerly, his complexion was beautiful and bright, but now it has disappeared!' At that time, King Śuddhodana also sent messengers to the Bodhisattva every day. Monks, in that way, the Bodhisattva, as before, in order to show wonderful deeds in the world, to engage beings whose actions have deteriorated in work and deeds, to speak of the accumulation of merit, to show the qualities of great wisdom, and to distinguish the limbs of meditation, showed the practice of austerities for six years with one sesame seed, one buckwheat seed, and one grain of rice, without any weakness of mind. The Bodhisattva, having sat in the lotus position for six years, remained as he was, without any deterioration of conduct. He did not go into the shade when the sun set, nor did he go into the sun from the shade. He did not seek shelter from the wind, sun, or rain. He did not drive away flies, bees, or poisonous snakes. He did not discard feces, urine, saliva, or mucus. He did not contract or stretch. He remained without lying face down, face up, or on his back. Neither great clouds, nor bad lands, nor rain, nor hail, nor autumn, nor spring, nor winter could shake the Bodhisattva's body.
