Chapter Seventeen, The Chapter on Asceticism. Chapter Seventeen, The Chapter on Asceticism. Monks, at that time, Raṇadīpa's son, Uttara-vrata, resided in the great city of Rājagṛha, dwelling with a large assembly of disciples, seven hundred disciples. He taught them the Dharma that corresponded to the ascetic practice of neither perception nor non-perception. Monks, the Bodhisattva Raṇadīpa's son, Uttara-vrata, possessed a sangha, was the leader of a sangha, the teacher of a sangha, desired fame, was worshipped by many people, was wise, and known by all. Having seen him, he thought to himself: "This Raṇadīpa's son, Uttara-vrata, possesses a sangha, is the leader of a sangha, the teacher of a sangha, desires fame, is worshipped by many people, is wise, and known by all. If I were to go to him and not undertake asceticism and austerities, he would not develop a particularly superior perception of me, nor would he understand me with direct knowledge, and I would not refute the conditioned, defiled, and clinging dhyānas, samādhis, and samāpattis. I should demonstrate a method by which the objects of meditation and the aims of samāpatti become manifest to him, and by which it is shown that worldly samādhis do not arise. I should go to Raṇadīpa's son, Uttara-vrata, and, in order to demonstrate the excellence of my samādhi qualities, I should promise to be his disciple and show that conditioned samādhi is meaningless." Monks, then, the Bodhisattva, having considered that matter, went to where Raṇadīpa's son, Uttara-vrata, was, and having arrived, said this to Raṇadīpa's son, Uttara-vrata: "Friend, who is your teacher? Who teaches the Dharma that knows all?" Having said this, Raṇadīpa's son, Uttara-vrata, said this to the Bodhisattva: "Friend, I have no teacher, but I myself have correctly understood this." The Bodhisattva said: "What have you understood?" He said,

pa. It is the path of absorption in the realm of neither perception nor non-perception. The Bodhisattva said: "I wish to receive from you the instructions and subsequent teachings on the path of samadhi." He said: "So be it," from the saying of this to the giving of the instructions. Then the Bodhisattva went to one side and sat down in the lotus position. As soon as he sat down, the Bodhisattva's excellence of merit, and the excellence of wisdom, and the excellence of the fruit of well-practiced previous deeds, and the excellence of familiarity with all samadhis, and for the sake of subduing his mind, all the worldly absorptions such as meditation, hundreds and thousands, together with their aspects, together with their distinctions, became manifest. Then the Bodhisattva, with mindfulness and awareness, arose from his seat and went to where Rangs-byed's son Lhag-spyod was, and having arrived, he said this to Rangs-byed's son Lhag-spyod: "Friend, is there anything else higher than the path of neither perception nor non-perception?" He said: "There is not." Then the Bodhisattva thought to himself: "Is it only Lhag-spyod who has faith, diligence, mindfulness, samadhi, and wisdom? I also have faith, diligence, mindfulness, samadhi, and wisdom." Then the Bodhisattva said this to Rangs-byed's son Lhag-spyod: "Friend, the Dharma that you have realized, I have also understood." He said: "Therefore, come, you and I will study these assemblies together," and Lhag-spyod placed the Bodhisattva in the position of a teacher, agreeing in meaning. The Bodhisattva said: "Friend, this path does not lead to disenchantment, does not lead to detachment, does not lead to cessation, does not lead to peace, does not lead to direct knowledge, does not lead to perfect enlightenment, does not lead to the state of a renunciate, does not lead to nirvana." Monks, in this way the Bodhisattva exhorted Lhag-spyod and his disciples, and that is enough.

From the place called "" until he was allowed to leave. At that time, the five good men, the son of Rangs-byed, Lhag-spyod, practicing celibacy, thought to themselves: "We have sought and strived for this goal for a long time, but we have not been able to exhaust its boundaries and end. However, the ascetic Gautama has exhausted and realized it with little effort, and he does not desire these either. If he seeks above that, without a doubt, he will become the teacher of the world. What he realizes, he will also share with us." After considering this, the five good men left the presence of Rangs-byed's son, Lhag-spyod, and followed the Bodhisattva. Monks, in this way, the Bodhisattva stayed in Rajagriha as long as he was pleased, and together with the five good men, he traveled and wandered in the country of Magadha. Also, at that time, between Rajagriha and Gaya Mountain, other gatherings were holding festivals. Those gatherings also invited the Bodhisattva to stay with the five good men, and invited them to meals. Monks, after that, the Bodhisattva traveled and wandered in the country of Magadha, and went to Gaya Mountain Galava in the country of Magadha, and arrived there. On the top of that Gaya Mountain, the Bodhisattva stayed for the sake of abandonment. When he stayed there, three similes that had never been heard or known before appeared. What are the three? Whether they are ascetics or Brahmins, if they do not keep their bodies separate from desires, do not keep their minds separate from desires, and are delighted in desires, attached to desires, longing for desires, craving desires, completely tormented by desires, and clinging to desires, then they are not close to peace. They harm themselves and cause suffering to their bodies, experiencing intense, unbearable, hot feelings of suffering. However, they cannot realize the excellence of the supreme human Dharma, and the distinction of the noble wisdom vision. For example, if a person wants fire, takes a wet wooden tinder and a wet wooden drill, puts them in water and drills, can he produce fire?
