He sent a Brahmin leader as a messenger to someone, saying, 'Please give one of your daughters to my young man.' The one with the staff said, 'This noble young man was born in the palace and lives comfortably. This is the custom of our family: we give daughters to those who know skills, and not to those who do not know skills. But this young man neither knows skills, nor does he know swordsmanship, throwing, strength, and wrestling techniques. How can I give my daughter to someone who does not know skills?' He repeated these words to the king. Then the king thought to himself, 'He has already taunted me twice like this. When I said, why not let the young men of the Shakya clan come to serve the young man?' He also said, 'Are we coming to serve sheep?' I think he will say the same to me.' Thinking this, he was unhappy. The Bodhisattva heard these words and went to King Śuddhodana, and after arriving, said, 'What has happened that you are so unhappy?' The king said, 'What is the use of asking that young man?' The young man said, 'God, you cannot refuse to tell me.' The Bodhisattva asked King Śuddhodana three times, and then King Śuddhodana told the Bodhisattva those things. The Bodhisattva said, 'God, is there anyone in this city who can compete with me in skill?' Then King Śuddhodana laughed and said to the Bodhisattva, 'Child, can you demonstrate skill?' He replied, 'God, I can do it very well.' Therefore, please gather all those who seek skill, and I will demonstrate skill in front of them.' Then, King Śuddhodana announced in the great city of Kapilavastu, 'From today, in seven days, the young man will demonstrate his skill. Let all those who know skill come!' After seven days, about five hundred Shakya youths gathered together. Then, Sā Tsho, the daughter of the Shakya with the staff,

Having erected the victory banner, here, with the skill of swords, throwing, strength, and the way of wrestling, whoever wins, take this (banner), thus they made a vow. At that time, the first of all to come was the youth Devadatta, who came from the city. At that time, a white elephant, the mount of the Bodhisattva, of exceedingly great size, was being led into the city. The youth Devadatta, seeing this, became arrogant with jealousy, the pride of the Shakya clan, and the pride of strength. He seized the elephant by the trunk with his left hand, and with his right hand, he clapped his palm once, and the elephant was killed. After that, the youth Sundarananda appeared, and seeing that the great elephant had been killed at the city gate, he asked, "Who killed it?" They replied, "Devadatta killed it." He said, "Devadatta has done something not good." He seized the elephant by the tail and threw it far away from the city gate. After that, the Bodhisattva came riding in a chariot, and the Bodhisattva saw that the elephant had been killed in that way. Having seen it, he also asked, "Who killed it?" They replied, "Devadatta killed it." He said, "Devadatta has done something not good. Who threw it from this city gate?" They replied, "Sundarananda threw it." He said, "What Sundarananda did is also good, but this sentient being has a large body, and if it rots, the whole city will be filled with an unpleasant odor." Then, the Bodhisattva, sitting in the chariot, stretched one foot onto the ground, and with the toe of his foot, he lifted the elephant, and passing over seven layers of walls and seven layers of moats, he threw it outside the city, a distance of one yojana. The place where the elephant fell became a great pit, and it is now called the Elephant Pit. At that time, hundreds and thousands of gods and humans cried out, "Ema, alala!" and made hundreds and thousands of sounds of clamor and noise, and waved their garments. From the midst of the sky, the sons of the gods also spoke these verses: Like an elephant king, majestic in gait, With his toe, he lifted the elephant king, Passing over seven walls and seven moats.

Having completely transcended, he was cast far away from the outskirts of this city. This one with supreme wisdom will not devour demons. Beings with bodies tall with the power of pride, from this city of samsara, far away, with the power of wisdom, he will cast them. Monks, then five hundred Shakya youths came out of the city and went to the place where the Shakya youths were displaying their skills. King Suddhodana and the Shakya elders, and many common people, also wanted to see the difference in skills between the Bodhisattva and the other Shakya youths, and went to that place. Then, first, those Shakya youths who were skilled in writing and knew the rituals of writing competed with the Bodhisattva in writing. At that time, those Shakyas, having placed the spiritual friends of all the teachers as witnesses, said: 'Among these youths, whoever is most outstanding in writing or in the completion of the types of letters, please distinguish.' Then, the spiritual friend of all the teachers, having visibly seen the Bodhisattva's expertise in writing, showed a smiling face and spoke these verses: In the human world or the world of gods, or the world of asuras or the world of gandharvas, as many letters as there are in all the worlds, this pure being has mastered them. The names of the letters and the types of letters that this moon among men knows, neither you nor I can know. I have directly seen this one, he will be victorious.' The Shakyas said: 'Let this youth be seen as particularly outstanding in the knowledge of letters, but we shall compete to see what is special about this youth in the knowledge of numbers.' Then, they invited one named Shakya Truth-Speaker, who was a great mathematician, accomplished in counting and arithmetic, as a witness, saying: 'Among these youths, please see who is most outstanding in the knowledge of numbers.' Then, at that time, the Bodhisattva began the calculation. One Shakya youth began to calculate, but could not catch up with the Bodhisattva. Then, two Shakya youths, three, four, five, ten, twenty, thirty
