Twelfth, the chapter on displaying arts. Twelfth, the chapter on displaying arts. The Mahāyāna sūtra called "The Extensive Play of the Noble One," volume seven. Monks, that youth was exceedingly marvelous. At another time, King Śuddhodana was sitting with the assembly of the Śākyas in the assembly hall. Some of the elder Śākyas said to King Śuddhodana: "O God, please be aware. This youth, Sarvārthasiddha, has been predicted by the Brahmin fortune-tellers and many wise deities, saying: 'If this youth goes forth, he will become a Tathāgata, an Arhat, a perfectly complete Buddha. If he does not go forth, he will become a universal monarch, victorious over the four quarters, a king of Dharma, endowed with Dharma and possessing the seven precious things.' His seven precious things are: the precious wheel, the precious elephant, the precious horse, the precious jewel, the precious woman, the precious householder, and the precious minister. And a son will be born to him who is brave, steadfast, possessing limbs of supreme form, and utterly destroying the armies of others. Without harm and without weapons, he will conquer this entire earth in accordance with Dharma and will dwell alone.' Thus they said. Therefore, we should take a wife for this youth. In that way, surrounded by a multitude of women, he will enjoy pleasure and will not go forth. If that happens, our lineage of universal monarchs will not be cut off, and all the kings of the border regions will not speak ill of us, but will come to serve us." Then, King Śuddhodana said: "If that is to be done, then look for a daughter who is suitable for the youth." At that time, about five hundred Śākyas each said: "My daughter is suitable for the youth." The king said: "This youth is very...

Therefore, your giving is very great. Go and ask that young man which daughter he wants. They all gathered together and told the young man about this matter. The young man said: Please allow me to answer this question in seven days. Then, the Bodhisattva thought to himself: I have infinitely understood the faults of desire. Desire is the root of quarrels, resentment, sorrow, and suffering. It is like a terrifying poisonous leaf, like a flame, like the edge of a sword. I do not want the merits of desire, I do not want women and beauties. For the sake of the happiness of meditation and samadhi, for peace, I will live in the silent forest. He thought again, and then manifested skillful means, looking to completely ripen sentient beings, and generated great compassion. At that time, he spoke these verses: From the mud and reed thickets, the lotus blossoms. Among the crowds of people, the king receives offerings. When the Bodhisattva obtains the supreme retinue, then he will subdue billions of beings and make them immortal. All the wise Bodhisattvas who have appeared in the past, they all served consorts, sons, and maids, yet they were not tainted by desire, and the happiness of meditation did not diminish. I too shall follow their virtues. For those who lack conduct, merit, and truthful words, any vulgar woman is not suitable for me. Whoever can make my heart rejoice, and is cautious, with pure appearance, age, and lineage, is appropriate. Therefore, he wrote down the merits in verses: If there is such a daughter, please grant her to me. Do not gather vulgar people, I do not need them. If she possesses these merits, please grant her to me. Even if she is young and beautiful, she should be free from the arrogance of appearance. Like loving brothers and sisters, she should have a loving heart. She should be happy to give, and give offerings to shramanas and brahmins. If there is such a daughter, please, father, grant her to me. She should not have arrogance, pride, and hatred, and should be free from hypocrisy, jealousy, and deceit, possessing an upright character. Even in dreams, she should not be attached to other men. My husband should be content, constantly restrained, and cautious. She should not have arrogance, not be distracted, be able to endure, and hold the right path. She should not have arrogance, be free from haughtiness, and be like a maidservant.
