I. Mahakashyapa, Ananda, and the Bodhisattva Maitreya, together with five thousand Bodhisattvas, arrived at the place where the Blessed One was. They circumambulated the Blessed One and sat down on their respective seats. The Four Great Kings, Indra the Lord of the Gods, the gods of Suddhavasa, Tushita, Nirmāṇarati, and Paranirmita-vaśavartin, also went to the place where the Blessed One was, together with countless sons of the gods who enjoy desire. They bowed their heads at the feet of the Blessed One, paid homage to the Blessed One, and sat down on one side. Brahma, Abhasvara, Subhakrtsna, Brhatphala, and the gods of the Pure Abodes, likewise, together with countless sons of the gods, paid homage to the Blessed One and sat down on one side. At that time, the Bodhisattva King of Great Joy entered into perfect inner absorption for seven days, without turning his mind to anything else. After seven days had passed, he contemplated and meditated, and having arisen from his perfect inner absorption, he went with the Bodhisattvas who had attained mastery over qualities to the courtyard where the Blessed One was, prostrated, and sat down on a seat with his palms joined before the Blessed One. Then the Blessed One, knowingly arising from that samadhi, looked at the entire assembly with the gaze of an elephant and remained silent. Then the Bodhisattva King of Great Joy said to the Blessed One, "Blessed One, now is the time for you to bestow the abundant teachings of the Dharma. If that is so, if the Blessed One would grant me the opportunity to speak for the sake of requesting and prophesying what is requested, I will ask the Blessed One some questions." When he had said this, the Blessed One said to the Bodhisattva King of Great Joy, "Son of good family, ask the Tathagata whatever you wish, and I will make your mind rejoice by prophesying the questions you have asked." When he had said this, the Bodhisattva

Then, King Utmost Joy said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, when I am alone here in solitude, engaged in true contemplation within, I think, 'Which Bodhisattvas will truly accomplish the meaning of enlightenment, and how will they, for the sake of enlightenment, use the perfections and other virtues as sources of merit?' Blessed One, is there a perfection that benefits sentient beings? Is there a perfection that benefits enlightenment? Is there a perfection with outflows? Is there a perfection without outflows?' Thus, after examining, in any case, in order for Bodhisattvas to truly grow, for Bodhisattvas to well receive and generate the order of the Dharma from the beginning, middle, and end, and in order to obtain the skillful means of practice, Utmost Joy obtains great joy, I request the Blessed One to widely proclaim it." The Blessed One said: "King Utmost Joy, well done! Well done! King Utmost Joy, it is good that you intend to ask the Tathagata about this matter! However, you have already asked this question of ninety kotis of Buddhas in the past. King Utmost Joy, therefore, listen very well and keep it in mind properly, and I will explain." "Blessed One, I understand." Then, the Blessed One said to the Bodhisattva King Utmost Joy: "Utmost King, there are six perfections that completely purify. There are six perfections that illuminate. There are six perfections that are beyond the world. There are six perfections that are focused on sentient beings. There are six perfections that abide. There are six perfections of samsara. There are six perfections of all afflictions. There are six perfections that benefit others. There are six perfections of place. There are six perfections of enlightenment.
