These are the essential words of the Tathāgatagarbha. Blessed One, what is called "death" and what is called "birth" are worldly terms. Blessed One, what is called "death" is the cessation of the faculties. Blessed One, what is called "birth" is the arising of new faculties. Blessed One, for the Tathāgatagarbha, there is no birth, no death, no transference, and no arising. Blessed One, the Tathāgatagarbha is beyond the realm of the characteristics of conditioned phenomena. Blessed One, the Tathāgatagarbha is permanent, stable, and enduring. Blessed One, because of this, the Tathāgatagarbha is not independently existent, but is related to liberated consciousness, and is its basis, support, and place. Blessed One, similarly, the Tathāgatagarbha is not unrelated, nor is it independently existent, but is related to unliberated consciousness, and is the basis, support, and place of external conditioned phenomena. Blessed One, if the Tathāgatagarbha did not exist, then there would be no weariness with suffering, and no desire, pursuit, or aspiration for nirvāṇa. What is the reason for this? Blessed One, these six consciousnesses, and this consciousness, Blessed One, like this, these seven dharmas are impermanent, momentary, and do not experience suffering, therefore these dharmas are not worthy of being weary of suffering, nor are they worthy of desiring, pursuing, and aspiring for nirvāṇa. Blessed One, the Tathāgatagarbha is without beginning or end, is ultimate, is of the nature of non-arising and non-ceasing, and experiences suffering. Blessed One, therefore, the Tathāgatagarbha is worthy of being weary of suffering, and is also worthy of desiring, pursuing, and aspiring for nirvāṇa. Blessed One, the Tathāgatagarbha is also not self, not sentient being, not life, and not person, Blessed One, the Tathāgatagarbha is for those sentient beings who are immersed in the view of the aggregates, and for those who have been harmed by perversion, and for emptiness...

It is not the domain of those with distracted minds. Oh, Blessed One, the essence of the Tathagata is the essence of the realm of the sacred Dharma. It is the essence of the Dharmakaya. It is the essence of the Dharma that transcends the world. It is the essence of the Dharma that is naturally completely pure. Oh, Blessed One, the Tathagatagarbha, naturally completely pure, defiled by adventitious afflictions, is the realm of the Tathagata. I think it is inconceivable. What is the reason for that? Oh, Blessed One, a virtuous mind is momentary, and it is completely defiled by afflictions. Oh, Blessed One, a non-virtuous mind is also momentary, but that mind is not completely defiled by afflictions. Oh, Blessed One, afflictions do not touch the mind, and the mind does not touch the afflictions. Oh, Blessed One, how can a mind that does not touch be defiled? Oh, Blessed One, there are adventitious afflictions, and the mind is also defiled, therefore, Oh, Blessed One, the meaning of the mind's naturally completely pure afflictions is difficult to understand. Oh, Blessed One, for this, you, Oh, Blessed One, are the eye, you are wisdom. Oh, Blessed One, you are the root of all dharmas, you are the master, you are the discernment. Then, after the Blessed One heard the explanation of the difficult-to-understand meaning by the goddess Shri Mala, he rejoiced and praised her, saying: Goddess, it is just so! Goddess, it is just so! The meaning of the adventitious afflictions of the mind's naturally completely pure nature is difficult to understand. Goddess, these two dharmas are difficult to understand, namely, the mind's naturally completely pure nature is difficult to understand, and the adventitious afflictions of that mind are difficult to understand. Goddess, those who can hear these two dharmas are you or other Bodhisattvas who possess great Dharma. Goddess, the remaining Shravakas only proceed with faith in the Tathagata regarding these two dharmas. Goddess, those of my Shravakas who have faith and follow faith are the first manifestation.
