There is no expectation of fruit ripening, nor does one dwell in the realm of moral governance. One is patient towards all beings and without anger. With diligence, one accomplishes virtuous deeds correctly, and with meditation, one abandons the formless realms. With skillful means, one correctly grasps wisdom, and with the four means of gathering, one correctly obtains the method. One possesses loving-kindness that is neither with nor without precepts, and listens to the Dharma respectfully and in due time. One dwells respectfully in peaceful monasteries, and does not delight in the various things of the world. One does not delight in the lesser vehicle, but generates desire for the great vehicle. One completely abandons sinful friends, and always relies on virtuous spiritual friends. One meditates on the four abodes of Brahma, and constantly plays with the five supernormal knowledges. One always follows wisdom, and does not abandon those who possess practice, nor does one abandon others who do not possess practice. One always speaks decisively, and always holds the truth with reverence. Having first generated the mind of enlightenment, one cultivates the Dharma praised by the Buddhas. The thirty-two Dharmas spoken by the Sugata, these are to be practiced by the sons of the Sugata. Those who are Bodhisattvas, they say that this Dharma is true, as spoken by the Sugata. Maitreya, I will show you the teachings that reveal the qualities of a Bodhisattva through similes. Maitreya, for example, this great earth is the livelihood of all beings, it does not change, and it does not expect to be repaid. Maitreya, similarly, the Bodhisattva who generates the first thought of enlightenment is also the livelihood of all beings until the essence of enlightenment is attained. It does not change, and it does not expect to be repaid. Therefore, it should be said: For example, this earth is the livelihood of all beings, just as it does not expect repayment and does not change, the Bodhisattva who first abides in the mind, until the wisdom of unsurpassed perfect enlightenment is attained, is the livelihood of all beings, not expecting repayment and not changing. One regards sons and enemies with equanimity in mind, and constantly seeks the most supreme enlightenment. Maitreya, for example, the element of water is for roots and trees.
