ing the vows of morality; completely holding the holy Dharma; giving lamps; and even giving to those who are familiar. Odsrung, these four will destroy the afflictions of the ground of the habitual tendencies of ignorance of a Bodhisattva.

These four are what cause all the virtuous roots of a Bodhisattva to be gathered. What are the four? They are: dwelling in solitude without hypocrisy; the four objects of gathering that cause one to be without hope of benefiting from taking; giving away body and life to all sentient beings while seeking the holy Dharma; and diligence in gathering all virtuous roots without ever being satisfied by hearing and meaning. Odsrung, these four dharmas will gather all the virtuous roots of a Bodhisattva. It is said: Dwell in solitude, completely abandoning hypocrisy. Gather the Victor's words, acting for sentient beings. Having undertaken to seek the holy Dharma completely, body and life are also completely given away. The roots of virtue are extremely few. Always without satisfaction in order to accomplish them correctly. For the sake of correctly gathering virtuous dharmas, these four dharmas were spoken by the Sugata. Odsrung, these four are immeasurable accumulations of merit of a Bodhisattva. What are the four? They are: giving Dharma with a pure mind without material possessions; having great compassion for those who have broken their vows; showing the mind of enlightenment to all sentient beings; and relying on patience towards the weak. Odsrung, these four are immeasurable accumulations of merit of a Bodhisattva. It is said: Giving Dharma with a pure mind without material possessions, is greatly praised by the Victor. Great compassion for those who do not have morality. Generating the mind for the sake of others' enlightenment. Taking on patience towards the weak. This is said to gather virtuous dharmas. Since following these will cause one to become a Victor, those Bodhisattvas should always follow them. Odsrung, these four will destroy the afflictions of the ground of the habitual tendencies of ignorance of a Bodhisattva. What are the four? They are: correctly holding the vows of morality; completely holding the holy Dharma; giving lamps; and even giving to those who are familiar. Odsrung, these four will destroy the afflictions of the ground of the habitual tendencies of ignorance of a Bodhisattva.

It is to create. Then it should be said like this: One who truly holds the vows of morality, One who holds the sacred Dharma and gives lamps, Likewise, even giving to acquaintances, The wise distinguish from the ground of ignorance. O Radiance, these four dharmas are the cause for a Bodhisattva to attain unobstructed wisdom. What are the four? Namely, giving the sacred Dharma, Properly holding the sacred Dharma and being without jealousy, And not despising others. O Radiance, these four dharmas are the cause for a Bodhisattva to attain unobstructed wisdom. Then it should be said like this: Those who are obstacles to enlightenment, Having completely abandoned the four and ten sins, When the wise likewise rely on twelve others, Touching immortality, they will attain enlightenment. Whatever noble beings hold, read, or greatly rely on this Dharma, The Victorious Ones have spoken of their infinite merit. The Victorious Ones have exhausted the measure of that. Compared to one who fills fields as numerous as the sands of the Ganges with jewels and offers them to the Victorious One, Whoever reads a verse of four lines from this, This merit cannot even be counted. O Radiance, one should not be called a Bodhisattva merely by the name of Bodhisattva. O Radiance, only one who practices the Dharma, practices equally, practices virtue, and abides in the Dharma is called a Bodhisattva. O Radiance, furthermore, a Bodhisattva is called a Bodhisattva when he possesses thirty-two qualities. What are the thirty-two? Namely: The superior intention to benefit and bring happiness to all sentient beings, Entering into the wisdom of omniscience, Measuring one's own needs and not being excessive, not slandering the wisdom of others, Being without pride, Showing superior intention, Genuine love without pretense, Having equanimity towards friends and enemies, Constantly meeting until the end of Nirvana, Speaking kindly with gentle words and a smiling face, Not being lazy towards those who have taken on burdens, Never cutting off great compassion for all sentient beings, Not being weary in mind, Hearing in order to seek the sacred Dharma,
