has been experienced, and that of the noble ones, endowed with mindfulness, abiding in happiness, is equanimity. It is said that, without joy, one cultivates and abides in the third dhyana. Having also abandoned happiness, and having previously abandoned suffering, and with the disappearance of both pleasant and unpleasant feelings, it is neither happiness nor suffering, but pure equanimity and mindfulness, one cultivates and abides in the fourth dhyana. In all respects, having completely transcended perceptions of form, with the cessation of perceptions of resistance, and not attending to perceptions of diversity, thinking 'space is infinite,' one cultivates and abides in the sphere of infinite space. In all respects, having completely transcended the sphere of infinite space, thinking 'consciousness is infinite,' one cultivates and abides in the sphere of infinite consciousness. In all respects, having completely transcended the sphere of infinite consciousness, thinking 'there is nothing,' one cultivates and abides in the sphere of nothingness. In all respects, having completely transcended the sphere of nothingness, one cultivates and abides in the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. In all respects, having completely transcended the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, one cultivates and abides in the cessation of perception and feeling. Maitreya, if a Bodhisattva possesses these nine qualities, he will abandon all the lower realms, not fall into the hands of evil friends, and quickly awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Maitreya, furthermore, if a Bodhisattva possesses ten qualities, he will abandon all the lower realms, not fall into the hands of evil friends, and quickly awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment.
