Thus it is. Knowing that the self possesses hands and feet. However, it does not have branches and limbs. It also completely abandons the earth element and completely grasps the dharma element. That dharma element is also in accordance with mindfulness. That mindfulness also possesses the power of the object of experience. The cause of grasping that the dharma element is in accordance with mindfulness is consciousness. If there is no consciousness, then the dharma element is not perceived. If there is no dharma element, then there is no realm of consciousness. The wind element follows after that consciousness. Furthermore, this earth element, such as the realm of mindfulness, the realm of feeling, the realm of dharma, and the realm of form, whatever they are, all follow after it. Having spoken thus, Bhadrapala asked the Blessed One: Blessed One, how is consciousness with form? The Blessed One said: Bhadrapala, here there is inner form and outer form. Among them, what is inner form? Whatever is the apprehended eye, that is outer form. Whatever is the consciousness of the eye, that is inner form. Whatever is the ear, that is outer form. Whatever is the consciousness of the ear, that is inner form. Whatever is the nose, that is outer form. Whatever is the consciousness of the nose, that is inner form. Whatever is the tongue, that is outer form. Whatever is the consciousness of the tongue, that is inner form. Whatever is the body, that is outer form. Whatever feeling arises from the contact of the body, that is inner form. Bhadrapala, it is like a blind person who, when overcome by sleep at night, sees the forms of gods, with limbs well-proportioned and exceedingly pleasing. Having seen them, he generates great joy. When he wakes up from sleep, he does not see those forms. The next morning, he says: Listen, last night in my dream I saw the form of a woman who was exceedingly pleasing, and a pleasure garden filled with countless people. There, I saw a human body that was very young, with arms as long as the excellent trunk of an elephant, with broad and full shoulders, and a broad chest.

Saying, "I see hard things," and reciting whatever beautiful ornaments are on the bodies of those people. Then, if that blind person does not see the forms of those people themselves, what do you think, Good Guardian? How does that blind person see forms in a dream? Good Guardian requested, "World Honored One, please grant me an explanation for that." The World Honored One said, "Good Guardian, therefore, because one possesses the inner eye of consciousness, one sees forms in dreams, but not with the eye of flesh. Just as when a person falls asleep and dreams, a moment of memory arises, so too is the memory of death similar to that. The inner form should also be viewed in the same way. Furthermore, Good Guardian, I shall explain how the realm of consciousness of a dead person transmigrates and moves like the realm of a seed. For example, if the realm of a seed is planted on the earth, it gathers the four elements. Similarly, this realm of consciousness also strongly grasps memory and completely grasps feelings, and also follows and grasps virtue and non-virtue, completely abandoning the body and transmigrating and moving. World Honored One, how does consciousness come to completely grasp virtue and non-virtue? Good Guardian, for example, a lotus jewel holds black or white light. Just as the nature of light is, it appears in that jewel, and its own nature appears in that jewel. Wherever it transmigrates, colors appear in that place, and similarly, this consciousness grasps virtue and non-virtue and transmigrates and moves. Then, Good Guardian again requested the World Honored One, saying, "World Honored One, how can consciousness be realized in this body?" The World Honored One said, "Good Guardian, this consciousness is not something that can be accumulated or piled up. Why is that? Because this realm of consciousness arises and ceases. Good Guardian, for example, although a sprout arises from a seed, a sprout does not arise from a rotten seed, nor does a sprout arise from a damaged seed. The sprout will also be accomplished. Good Guardian, what do you think? The seed of that sprout is a tree.
