It is so. The elephant is also like that. For example, even a small candle flame can dispel the great darkness in a yard or a room, similarly, this realm of consciousness, through the cause of taking action, accomplishes small and large forms. Having said this, the Great Physician said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, what is this? Is it something with form? Or is it something without form? What is its nature like? From what kind of conditions should it be observed? The Blessed One said: Great Physician, for this, the sphere of activities of karmas is the attainment of the happiness of gods, wealth, and the food of gods. For example, two poor people wander in the wilderness, and one of them finds cool water, while the other dies of thirst. Someone scoops up water with their hands, but does not give it to that person. Nor does anyone prevent the other person from knowing about it. It is solely through the power of merit that one finds water and the other does not. Similarly, good and non-virtuous dharmas should be observed in this way. Just as the waxing and waning of the moon, good and non-virtue should also be observed in that way. For example, when a moist fruit is fully ripe, its color changes. The change in color and the full ripening are also due to the influence of the fire element. Similarly, this body, through the power of merit, in the house of a merchant, is adorned with wealth and gold. In the abodes of the gods, it is adorned with the ornaments of the gods. Whatever excellent ornament there is, that is shown as an example of merit. For example, when a seed is planted in the ground, it appears as the top of a tree. The seed does not move from the trunk to the top of the tree, nor is the seed visible within the tree. Nor does anyone take the seed with both hands and place it on the top of the tree, nor is the seed seen moving from the root. Similarly, the good and non-virtuous that reside in the body are also not visible in the body. For example, when a flower arises from a seed, the flower is not visible within the seed, nor is the fruit visible within the flower. The seed and the flower are also inseparable, just like that.

Indeed, karma arises from the body, and the body also arises from karma. However, karma is not visible within the body, nor is the body visible within karma. For example, when a flower is fully ripe, the fruit becomes visible; similarly, when the body is mature, karmas become visible. For example, wherever a seed exists, a flower appears; similarly, wherever this body is born, good and bad karmas appear. Karma is not form, and maturation is also not form. For example, from the human body arises a shadow that is unclear and formless, and the shadow follows the person. The shadow is not connected to the person's body, and without the body, the shadow cannot arise. Similarly, good and bad are connected to this body. Wherever the body moves, karmas follow. Karmas do not follow because they are controlled by the body, nor do karmas arise without the body. For example, if the body is bathed with various medicines such as hot, astringent, and bitter ones, one will be freed from all diseases, and the radiance of a deity will appear on the body. Just as hot and astringent medicines make the body's complexion youthful and pleasing, and people will think, 'This person must have taken medicine.' The taste and maturation of those medicines are also not form, and although the taste and maturation are formless, karma appears in the radiance of the person. Similarly, good karma is also not form. From that, the body is formed, and through food, intimacy, enjoyment, and different kinds of clothing, the limbs are coordinated and one is supremely happy. Obtaining jewels, gold, and silver—all these are the fruits of good karma. Lineage and enjoyment flourish, but wealth declines, one is separated from intimacy, relies on others, eats bad food, sleeps on a bad bed, and has an ugly and repulsive body—these are the fruits of bad karma. For example, through a mirror, the beauty or ugliness of the face appears, the image in the mirror...

Moreover, just as the immaterial, similarly, due to the power of virtuous and non-virtuous actions, this consciousness arises among the gods, humans, sentient beings in hell, animals, and hungry ghosts. Great Physician, the actions should be viewed in this way. Thus, these actions follow consciousness. Question. World Honored One, how does this consciousness establish the senses? And how does it completely hold the great body? The World Honored One said: Great Physician, for example, a hunter enters a dense forest, pulls the bowstring very tightly, and shoots a large elephant with a poisoned arrow. When the poison meets the blood, it moves to the limbs and details, abandoning all the realms of the senses, hitting the vital points, changing the color of the blood, and moving to all the limbs and details. Again, abandoning the body, the poison comes out of the body. Great Physician, what do you think? How much is the poison and the elephant's body? Answer: Like Mount Sumeru and a mustard seed. Said: How the poison migrates, so too does this realm of consciousness completely abandon the body, also abandon the senses, and also completely abandon the realms. Thus, this consciousness abandons the senses. Great Physician, you also said, World Honored One, how does this consciousness completely hold the great body? Thus, how can one not think of this huge and rough body? For example, Mount Sumeru, the king of mountains, is eighty-four thousand yojanas high, and it is wrapped three times by the dragon kings Nanda and Upananda. The breath of the two dragon kings flows in and out, making the sea water undrinkable, and the breath of the two also shakes Mount Sumeru. Just as those two are great in poison, great in joy, and vast, so too are the sons of wealth increase and Holder of the Earth. Great Physician, what do you think? Is their consciousness different, and the consciousness of bees different? It should not be viewed in this way. Great Physician, thus, that consciousness is the consciousness of bees.
