Do not turn into the time of death! Those monks said thus: "Oh sons of gods, we do not have the power or authority to completely deviate from the teachings of the Tathagata. Even if we die because of this, we will not completely deviate from the teachings of the Tathagata." Then, the sons of gods from the Pure Abode realms said to those monks: "Oh long-lived ones, even the Tathagata, the lord of Dharma, abandoned the applied medicine and sought other medicines. You should also seek other medicines!" Then, those monks, without regret, sought other medicines and took them. They were completely liberated from that disease, and those who were free from disease manifested the state of Arhat within seven days. Son of the lineage, if the Tathagata had not sought other medicines, then those monks would not have sought other medicines either. Therefore, it would be impossible for them to be liberated from that disease, to be freed from afflictions, and to attain the state of Arhat. There would be no possibility, no occasion, and that is impossible, because that is the skillful means of the Tathagata. Why is it that the Tathagata, who is endowed with all merit, enters the city for alms, and then comes out again as if entering with a washed bowl? Son of the lineage, the Tathagata does not have even the slightest karmic obscuration, but the Tathagata must have compassion and protect future beings. When some alms-seeking monks enter villages, cities, towns, regions, and the surroundings of the royal palace for alms, if they do not find alms because they have little merit, then they will think of the Tathagata. Even the Tathagata, who is manifestly exalted by the splendor of all merit, enters the city for alms, just like entering with a washed bowl, and comes out without finding alms. Then what need is there to speak of us, who possess small roots of virtue? Therefore, we should not create discouragement because we have not found alms!" Thinking thus.

Therefore, they would think in their hearts. Therefore, observing the truth of the matter, the Thus-Gone One, for the sake of alms, just as he entered the town after washing his bowl, he came out again. Furthermore, some people would say this: those Brahmins and householders who did not offer food to the Thus-Gone One were blessed by the evil demon. If someone says this, son of good family, do not look at it that way. Why is that? Because the evil demon cannot obstruct the Thus-Gone One. Otherwise, it is the Thus-Gone One's own blessing that the evil demon blessed the Brahmins and householders, not by his own power. For the Thus-Gone One, even though he does not have even a slight obscuration of karma, but in order to fully ripen those sentient beings, the Thus-Gone One, just as he entered the town after washing his bowl, he came out again. At the time of the fasting, the Thus-Gone One and the Sangha of monks had no displeasure, and as before, so it was later, without high or low. Then, immediately, seventy thousand sons of gods gained faith and greatly revered the Thus-Gone One. The Thus-Gone One also taught them the Dharma in such a way that all of them would attain the Dharma eye, which is without dust, without stain, and completely pure in all Dharmas. The Brahmins and householders also, at another time, saw the qualities and contentment of the Teacher, the Bhagavan, and came before the Bhagavan to confess their sins. The Thus-Gone One also correctly taught them the Four Noble Truths, and therefore, from the beings of gods and humans, twenty-two thousand beings attained the Dharma eye, which is without dust, without stain, and completely pure in all Dharmas. Therefore, the reason and condition for the Thus-Gone One to come out, just as he entered the Brahmin's great Sala tree village after washing his bowl for the sake of alms, is like this. This is also the Thus-Gone One's skill in using skillful means. Why is that?

If the arrogant Brahmin girl tied a wooden bowl to her stomach and then slandered the Tathagata, saying, 'Shramana, you have made me pregnant, give me food and clothes.' Son of good family, the Tathagata has no obscurations of karma whatsoever. The Tathagata could even throw the arrogant Brahmin girl into worlds as numerous as the sands of the Ganges. However, the Tathagata knowingly remained neutral, and through skillful means, demonstrated the teachings in all actions. Why is that? Because in future assemblies, there will be ordained monks. If they are subjected to untrue slanders, they will feel regret and discouragement, be displeased with themselves, and fall into decline. When they are slandered, they will think, 'The Tathagata, who possesses all white dharmas, was also slandered, why wouldn't we be slandered?' They will remember the Tathagata, and at that time, they will suppress the slander, thereby practicing completely pure and completely cleansed conduct, and in order not to fall into decline. The arrogant Brahmin girl will temporarily increase all sinful actions, and because of her inherently unbelieving nature, she is obscured by karmic obscurations. Therefore, the aggregates, elements, and sources of perception—these slumbers—will undoubtedly cause harm to this teaching. If that person who increases all sinful actions were to slander the Tathagata even in a dream, he would become defiled upon awakening. Son of good family, if the Tathagata, through some means, acts to prevent the manifestation of that unwholesome action, he will also prevent it; if the Tathagata acts to protect, he will also protect. Why is that? Because the Tathagata has not completely abandoned any sentient being, and this is also the Tathagata's skillful means. Why would the all-knowing Tathagata allow the wandering beauty and the wanderers to take a life?
