Then, at dawn, the Blessed One arose from samādhi and, not long after, was surrounded by hundreds of thousands of retinues, teaching the Dharma while looking ahead, namely, the Brahmacarya, good in the beginning, good in the middle, good in the end, with good meaning, good words, unmixed, complete, pure, and perfectly purified, teaching it correctly. At that time, the Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva named Jñānottara was also assembled and dwelling in that very assembly. Then, the Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva Jñānottara rose from his seat, arranged his upper robe over one shoulder, knelt on his right knee on the ground, and, turning towards the Blessed One, folded his palms and said to the Blessed One:

After this request, the Blessed One said to the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, the supreme wisdom: Son of good family, ask the Tathagata whatever you wish, and I will give you a prophecy according to what you ask, so that your mind will be satisfied. After saying this, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, the supreme wisdom, said to the Blessed One: Venerable Blessed One, the skillful means of the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas, if it is called skillful means, then what is skillful means? Venerable Blessed One, how can a Bodhisattva Mahasattva be skilled in everything? After this question, the Blessed One said to the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, the supreme wisdom: Son of good family, well done, very well done! Son of good family, you are asking in order to benefit many beings, for the happiness of many beings, for the love of the world, for the benefit and happiness of many beings such as gods and humans, for the increase of wisdom of the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas of the present and future, for the perfection of all the Buddha's teachings, and for upholding the supreme Dharma of the Buddhas, Blessed Ones, of the past, future, and present. Son of good family, you want to ask the Tathagata about the skillful means of the Bodhisattvas, son of good family, you are doing well. Son of good family, therefore, listen well and keep it carefully in mind, and I will tell you about the skillful means of the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas. A skilled person in means even gives a single morsel of food to all sentient beings. Why is that? Son of good family, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who is skilled in means, even when he is born in the realm of animals, if he gives even a single morsel of food, he gives it with a mind endowed with omniscience, and he dedicates that root of virtue to all sentient beings, in order to perfect the Dharma of the Buddhas. With these two causes, he dedicates it to all sentient beings. What are the two? The mind of omniscience, and being skilled in dedication. Son of good family, that is the skillful means of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva. Furthermore, son of good family, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who is skilled in means rejoices in the roots of virtue accumulated by others, and also from himself, he dedicates and gives to all sentient beings, and also makes dedication. With that root of virtue dedicated to omniscience, he overcomes the givers and patrons who are separated from the mind of Bodhi, and also overcomes the receivers. Son of good family, that is also the skillful means of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva.
