Furthermore, one should be disciplined, peaceful, and diligent in the practice of calm abiding and insight. Maitreya, if a Bodhisattva-yana being possesses these four qualities, they will not be apparent or harmed in the final five hundred years when the sacred Dharma is destroyed, and they will be completely liberated in bliss. Therefore, Maitreya, if a son or daughter of good family of the Bodhisattva-yana wishes to be completely liberated in bliss without being apparent or harmed in the final five hundred years when the sacred Dharma is destroyed, and wishes to exhaust all karmic obscurations, they should not delight in busyness, dwell in monasteries, forests, and remote places, completely abandon sentient beings who are irrational and unmotivated, contemplate their own faults and not seek the faults of others, delight in silence, and delight in abiding in the Perfection of Wisdom. If they have the thought of wanting to communicate with other sentient beings, they should abide in a mind free from confusion and give the gift of Dharma. Maitreya, these twenty are the benefits of obtaining the gift of Dharma free from confusion and giving the gift of Dharma without seeking respect. What are these twenty? They are: one will become mindful, one will become wise, one will become intelligent, one will become stable, one will become knowledgeable, one will realize transcendent wisdom, one will become less attached, one will become less hateful, one will become less deluded, the demons will not find an opportunity in them, they will be remembered by the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, non-humans will protect them, the gods will increase their splendor, unfriendly people will not find an opportunity in them, their good friends will not be separated, their words will become gentle, they will obtain fearlessness, they will have more inner happiness, they will be praised by the wise, and their gift of Dharma will also be worthy of remembrance. Maitreya, these twenty are the benefits of the gift of Dharma free from confusion.

Abandoning the acquisition of offerings and respect, without hoping for clothes and food, with a mind that takes beneficial things as its guide, constantly and repeatedly giving the Dharma, that is its benefit. Loving-kindness, for the Dharma giving that possesses a mind free from material concerns, there are also twenty other benefits. What are the twenty? They are: unarisen joy will arise, arisen joy will not be exhausted, in order to obtain dharani, his mind will become upright, with small words he will accomplish the affairs of many sentient beings, with small words sentient beings will respectfully serve him, he will obtain the discipline of body, he will obtain the discipline of speech, he will obtain the discipline of mind, he will transcend the fear of the lower realms, he will die with great joy, all attacks of outsiders will be subdued by conforming to the Dharma, his splendor will be unbearable even for sentient beings of high lineage, what need to mention the inferior? The senses will not be overwhelmed, he will hold the three excellent benefits, he will obtain shamatha and vipassana, the austerities he practices will be perfected, he will not fall away from the effort he has initiated, he will universally measure the Dharma, he will quickly attain the irreversible ground, he will abide in accordance with all the conduct of Bodhisattvas. These twenty loving-kindnesses are the benefits of Dharma giving with a mind free from material concerns. Loving-kindness, in the future age, practitioners of the Bodhisattva vehicle will be very pleased with Dharma giving that has material concerns, but not with that which is without material concerns. Look at those whose wisdom is corrupted! They rely on the homes of friends and the homes of beggars, thinking: how will they generate faith and respect for me? With such a mind they give Dharma. They abandon Dharma giving without material concerns and seek clothes, food, bedding, cushions, and medicine.

Nourishment. For the sake of medicine and implements, one will teach the Dharma to others. Maitreya, for example, if someone, whether it is the corpse of a dog, the corpse of a person, or the corpse of a monkey, in short, if one hangs a dead, rotten, and smelly thing around their neck, they will feel ashamed, unhappy, and completely abandon it because they want to be clean. Similarly, those people will feel ashamed and unhappy because of the unadulterated Dharma's generosity, because they know it is worthless, so they will feel weary and abandon it and leave. Because they think that we are not given clothes and food, so our Dharma's generosity is meaningless, we are here meaninglessly unhappy sitting, they gather disciples in order to decorate their bodies more and more, but not in order to gather sentient beings more and more. They say this: We gather retinues with compassion, and we need to be respected very much. We go to villages, cities, towns, regions, and the palaces of kings in order to fully ripen sentient beings with beneficial things, they make many people know these things, but their minds turn to clothes and food. Maitreya, now do not say that one ripens sentient beings with a contaminated mind. Why? Because if one has not fully ripened oneself, what need is there to speak of fully ripening sentient beings? Because this position is not easy to obtain. Maitreya, I do not say that those who highly value respect and are stained by the pleasure of bodily respect are beneficial things. Why? Because they only gather retinues for the sake of bodily pleasure, but not because they abide in diligent practice. Maitreya, I do not say that those who behave improperly live in solitary places. I do not say that those who have little merit are content with little desire. I do not say that those who crave good food are almsmen. I do not say that those who crave inferior clothes are those who have rough dusters. I do not say that those who mix with householders and renunciants are unattached. I do not say that the deceitful are
