They do not always desire virtues, but rejoice in these misdeeds. They inquire about the actions of worldly people, delighting in irrational speech, but they do not rejoice in rational speech. They rejoice in these misdeeds. They constantly rebuke those who strive for discipline, and destroy them with the power of wrongdoing. They manifestly engage in unpleasant actions, rejoicing in these misdeeds. They constantly seek out the faults of others, but do not see the faults they have themselves. They seek faults in those who possess virtues, rejoicing in these misdeeds. That child is quickly despised by others. When they teach the Dharma to others, they cannot realize it because their wisdom has declined. They rejoice in these misdeeds. Having seen these harmful misdeeds, who would rejoice in evil deeds? Heroes always perform supreme actions, and whatever they do is not in vain. Even if they speak a thousand times, they do not retain a single word. They are rebuked by the wise. Whoever engages in active deeds, the noble ones constantly criticize them in this way. Therefore, the wise should always abandon these evil deeds and perform whatever good deeds are praised by the Buddhas. Then, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Maitreya said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, those Bodhisattvas who abandon the supreme Dharma and engage in evil deeds have very little wisdom and are diminished by wisdom." After speaking thus, the Blessed One said to the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Maitreya: "Maitreya, it is so, it is so. As you have said, those Bodhisattvas who abandon the supreme Dharma and engage in evil deeds have very little wisdom and are diminished by wisdom. Maitreya, furthermore, you should believe and understand. Those Bodhisattvas who have no practice, no meditation, no renunciation, no recitation, and do not seek extensive learning are not ordained in the teachings of the Tathagata."

Maitreya, the teachings of the Tathagata are distinguished by meditation and renunciation, gathered by wisdom, abide in wisdom, and distinguished by diligence, but not by the affairs of householders and social engagements. Like this, the work of social engagements is connected with unreasonable things, connected with those who delight in activities, and covered by worldly affairs. Bodhisattvas should not generate desire for this. Maitreya, if a Bodhisattva diligently fills this three-thousand great thousand world realm with stupas of the seven precious things by being diligent in social engagements, that is not pleasing, not making an image, not respecting. Maitreya, if a Bodhisattva even holds, recites, reads, or fully understands just one four-line verse that possesses the perfections, then that will be respecting me, honoring me, making an image of me, and making offerings to me. Why is that? Maitreya, the enlightenment of the Tathagatas comes from much learning, not from holding onto things. Maitreya, if a Bodhisattva, being diligent in social engagements, covers a Bodhisattva who is diligent in receiving teachings and reciting with the covering of social engagements, then that one who desires merit will generate a great heap of non-merit, and will also completely grasp karmic obscurations. Why is that? Because all three bases of meritorious actions arise from wisdom. Maitreya, therefore, a Bodhisattva who is diligent in social engagements should not obstruct a Bodhisattva who is diligent in receiving teachings and reciting. All those who are engaged in social engagements, even if this Jambudvipa is completely filled with them, should pay homage and serve one Bodhisattva who is diligent in receiving teachings and reciting. Bodhisattvas who are diligent in receiving teachings and reciting, even if they fill Jambudvipa, should pay homage and serve one Bodhisattva who is diligent in internal contemplation.

That should be done. If done in that way, the Tathagata will rejoice and grant permission, and their service will be well done. Whoever has faith in the practice of wisdom and makes offerings and services, the accumulation of merit will increase immeasurably. Why is that? Because the work of wisdom is difficult work, it is unsurpassed, it is supreme, and it is particularly superior and manifestly superior to all three worlds. Maitreya, therefore, a Bodhisattva who strives diligently, seeks meaning, and wishes to initiate diligence, should strive for wisdom and should initiate diligence to seek wisdom completely. Then, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Maitreya asked the Blessed One: Blessed One, the faults of Bodhisattvas who like noise and like work have been declared. Blessed One, how should a Bodhisattva examine the faults of those who like elaboration? By examining which qualities will a Bodhisattva abide in peace and abide without contention? The Blessed One said: Maitreya, the faults of a Bodhisattva who likes elaboration, in brief, should be examined in these twenty ways. In detail, the Tathagata has declared them infinitely, and there will be no end to them. What are the twenty? Maitreya, a Bodhisattva who likes elaboration abides in much suffering and discomfort in this very life, and will completely degenerate from patience, his unfriendly ones will rejoice, the demon will also be satisfied with him, the demon's entourage will also like him, his unarisen virtues will not arise, his arisen virtues will disappear, fighting and resentment, arguing and debating will increase, and through fighting, arguing, and debating, he will manifestly accumulate the karma of going to bad destinies, holding the path of carelessness, his tongue faculty will become rough, and the teachings he has received will not abide well,
