If compared, it's like comparing Mount Sumeru to the disheveled, blind old woman Sundarika; it's not even close to one percent. From one thousandth, to one hundred thousandth, even to a billionth, it's unbearable! The Blessed One said: Ananda, if you practice pure conduct correctly, you will have such excellent benefits and virtues. Now you should firmly practice pure conduct, and you will be born in the heavens and experience such happiness. After hearing this, Ananda was delighted and sat there without saying a word. Then, the Blessed One and the Venerable Ananda, together, disappeared from the heavenly realm and went to the Jeta Grove in Anathapindika's Garden in Shravasti. At that time, the Venerable Ananda was diligently practicing pure conduct in the heavenly palace. The Blessed One, with his wisdom, knew Ananda's thoughts, and said to the Venerable Ananda: Ananda, go and tell the monks, 'None of you should sit together with Ananda on the same seat, do not walk in the same place, do not hang your robes on the same rope, do not put your bowls and pills in the same place, do not read scriptures in the same place, do not chant together.' You should instruct them like this. The Venerable Ananda also followed the Buddha's instructions and warned the monks, and the monks said: 'We will follow the Buddha's teachings.' At that time, the Venerable Ananda felt very ashamed and distressed when he saw that he was abandoned by many. Later, at another time, the Venerable Ananda was working with many monks in the place of offering, sewing robes. At that time, the Venerable Ananda saw this and thought: 'These monks do not live with me because they have completely abandoned me. The Venerable Ananda is my brother, and he will not despise me in any way.' Thinking this, he went to the Venerable Ananda and sat with him. At that time, the Venerable Ananda immediately got up and left.

He said, "Kungawo, the other monks are of the lineage of abandoning self. Since you are my brother, why do you abandon self?" The Venerable Kungawo said, "It is indeed so, it has such a meaning, but you go another path, and I also go another path, therefore we are strangers to each other." He said, "What is my path? What is your path?" He said, "You believe in being born in the heavens and practice pure conduct. I, in order to completely pursue nirvana, completely eliminate afflictions from all desires." Hearing these words, he was very unhappy and overwhelmed by sorrow. Then, the Blessed One, knowing his thoughts with his wisdom, said to the Venerable Gawo, "Have you ever seen the hell of sentient beings before?" He replied, "I have not seen it." The Blessed One said, "Hold the edge of my Dharma robe." He also grabbed the robe, and the Blessed One led him to the place of the hell of sentient beings. Then, the Blessed One sat on one side and said to the Venerable Gawo, "Go and look at the hells of sentient beings." The Venerable Gawo also went as he was told, and first saw the Behara River. Then gradually he arrived at the Sword Leaf Forest, the Mire of Excrement, and the Place of Fire. Entering those places and looking carefully, he saw many sentient beings suffering various kinds of pain: some had their tongues, teeth, and eyes pulled out by dry things; some had their bodies sawn by saws; some had their limbs cut off by axes; some were stabbed by Shakti weapons, double-edged battle axes, and Begas; some were struck by iron hammers; some were stuffed into iron containers; some climbed the Sword Leaf Mountain and the Sword Leaf Tree; some were pounded by pestles; some were entangled by their own intestines; some embraced copper pillars; some sat in iron pots, suffering unbearable pain. Some sentient beings were burning in the flames of iron and copper, in the boiling, extremely hot light.

The merchant saw those who were experiencing such suffering. Furthermore, he saw an empty iron cauldron boiling, with human tongues blazing intensely and a heat devoid of sentient beings. Greatly frightened, he asked the hell's guard: 'Hey, for what reason are sentient beings being cooked in the other iron cauldrons, while this one alone is boiling empty?' The guard replied: 'The Blessed One's younger brother, named Ananda, has aspired to be born as a god and has practiced celibacy with single-minded devotion. By practicing correctly, he will be born in the realm of the gods. Although he will temporarily experience happiness, after his death he will enter this iron cauldron. Therefore, we are now lighting the fire under the iron cauldron, waiting for him.' Hearing this, Ananda was greatly terrified, his hair stood on end, and dust arose from his body. He thought: 'If they were to know that I am Ananda, they would throw me alive into the cauldron.' Thinking thus, he quickly fled from that place to where the Blessed One was. The Blessed One asked: 'Have you seen the sentient beings in hell?' He shed tears of compassion and, stammering like a mute, said: 'I have seen them.' The Blessed One asked: 'What things have you seen?' He then related in detail to the Blessed One all that he had seen. The Blessed One said: 'Ananda, such are the faults of aspiring to be born as a god and practicing celibacy correctly in order to fully seek the realm of the gods. Therefore, you should now practice celibacy with the intention of fully seeking nirvana, and you should not strive too much with excessive delight in being born as a god.' Having heard the Blessed One's words, the venerable Ananda sat in silence, feeling ashamed. Then, the Blessed One, knowing his thoughts, disappeared from the realm of sentient beings in hell and returned to Prince Jeta's Grove, where he addressed the venerable Ananda and the monks: 'There are three kinds of inner defilements, namely, desire.'
