Their loving-kindness is to protect all sentient beings. Furthermore, young one, the loving-kindness of bodhisattvas who have generated the first thought is focused on sentient beings. The loving-kindness of bodhisattvas who have entered into practice is focused on the Dharma. The loving-kindness of bodhisattvas who have attained perfect patience is without focus. Young one, this is called the loving-kindness of bodhisattva great beings. Because bodhisattvas abide greatly in that loving-kindness, they pervade all sentient beings with loving-kindness. So then, young one, what is the great compassion of a bodhisattva? Young one, for a bodhisattva, that which precedes the desire for unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment is great compassion. For example, young one, just as breathing out and breathing in precede the life force of a person. Young one, likewise, great compassion precedes the bodhisattva who perfectly accomplishes the Great Vehicle. For example, young one, just as the wheel jewel precedes all the jewels of a universal monarch. Young one, likewise, great compassion precedes all the Buddha-dharmas of a bodhisattva great being, and that great compassion does not abandon all sentient beings. Young one, how does the great compassion of a bodhisattva enter into all sentient beings? Young one, for example, when a bodhisattva sees sentient beings who are bound by the view of the aggregates and who are attached to views, forming many forms, he teaches the Dharma in order to abandon being bound by the view of the aggregates. Thus, the great compassion of a bodhisattva enters into sentient beings. Furthermore, young one, when a bodhisattva sees sentient beings abiding in an untrue, inverted state, perceiving impermanence as permanence, perceiving suffering as happiness, perceiving selflessness as self, and perceiving impurity as purity, he teaches the Dharma in order to abandon the untrue inversions. Thus, the great compassion of a bodhisattva enters into sentient beings. Yan Zhag

When a Bodhisattva sees those beings who are attached to perverse conduct, even engaging in sexual misconduct with their mothers and sisters, the Bodhisattva thinks thus: Alas! These worldly beings are assemblies of non-Aryas, filled with falsehood and devoid of shame. Thus, they dwell in the womb of their mother, emerge from the door of that very womb, and yet engage in desire with her; how is this possible? How is it possible to unite and engage in sexual intercourse with a sister who dwells in the same womb? Alas! These beings are ruined! Utterly ruined! Completely ruined! They are driven by attachment, driven by hatred, driven by delusion, driven by ignorance. They have fallen from the Dharma and abide in what is not Dharma. They completely engage in discordant practices. They are the realm of activity for beings in hell, the realm of activity for the animal realm, the realm of activity for the world of Yama, engaging in the wrong path! Young man, just as a fox near the edge of a charnel ground, close to a great land, is harassed by dogs at night and falls from a great precipice, so too are these young beings like foxes. Young man, just as a blind man, harassed by dogs, comes close to a great precipice, alas! Young man, these beings are also like blind men. Young man, just as a pig eats unclean things and its realm of activity is unclean, young man, alas! Likewise, these beings are like pigs. That is not a mother, that is a sister; how can one make her a wife? They are driven by afflictions, are in the retinue of Mara, bound by the noose of Mara, and sunk in the mire of desire. For the sake of abandoning all their desires, the Dharma is taught. Thus, great compassion of the Bodhisattva arises for these beings. Young man, furthermore, when a Bodhisattva sees beings obscured by the five obscurations, stung by the thorn of desire, attached to and clinging to the six sense sources, when the eye sees forms, they grasp at signs and do not...
