Chapter Five: The Chapter on Equanimity. Chapter Five: The Chapter on Equanimity. Eighth Section: Furthermore, Shariputra, bodhisattvas who are firmly established in faith are to be regarded as vessels of the Buddhas, the Bhagavat. They are to be regarded as vessels of the categories of Dharma in the Bodhisattva's collection. Having recognized them as vessels of the Buddhas' teachings, one should approach them and thoroughly and correctly explain the path of the Bodhisattva. Therefore, Shariputra, in this way, bodhisattvas who are firmly established in faith are to be regarded as vessels of the Buddhas, the Bhagavat. They are to be regarded as vessels of the categories of Dharma in the Bodhisattva's collection. Having recognized them as vessels of the Buddhas' teachings, one should approach them and thoroughly and correctly explain the path of enlightenment. Thus, it should be understood. Shariputra, in the past, in a time long ago, immeasurable kalpas ago, even more immeasurable epochs, vast and boundless, inconceivable, at that time, there was a Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened Buddha named Great Mass. Endowed with knowledge and conduct, Gone to Bliss, Knower of the World, Supreme Guide for Taming Beings, Teacher of Gods and Humans, Buddha, Bhagavat, who appeared in the world. In this world with gods, with demons, with Brahma, with ascetics, with Brahmins, with beings, with gods, with humans, with asuras, having realized it directly through his own superknowledge, he abided. He taught the Dharma, the pure conduct, good in the beginning, good in the middle, good in the end, with good meaning, good words, unmixed, completely perfect, completely pure, completely cleansed, he taught it correctly. Shariputra, the assembly of Hearers of that Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened Buddha, Great Mass, was a great assembly of seventy-two trillion kotis of Hearers. All of them were Arhats, with defilements exhausted, without afflictions, their minds all having reached the other shore of the sacred. Shariputra, at that time there was a king named King Life Victorious, a king who possessed Dharma.

Also, Shariputra, there is a king named Life-Victorious, whose city is named All-Victorious Banner. That king's residence is prosperous, abundant, peaceful, fruitful, joyful, densely populated, and filled with people. Shariputra, the prince of King Life-Victorious is named Diligent Practice, who in the past had created virtuous roots, had served the Buddhas of the past, and had revered countless billions of Buddhas in the past. He was of good form, beautiful, pleasing to behold, and possessed the supreme quality of good and flourishing complexion. Shariputra, at that time, the prince Diligent Practice appeared in the Pleasure Garden together with the retinue of consorts. Then, the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened Buddha, Great Body Assembly, realized, "Alas! This prince is a vessel for the Dharma category of the Bodhisattva Treasury. Alas! This prince Diligent Practice is a vessel for the Dharmas of the Buddhas." Having recognized this, he went to the Pleasure Garden, to the place where the prince Diligent Practice was, and having arrived, he remained in the sky above, and thoroughly showed the path to enlightenment to the prince Diligent Practice. What is the path to enlightenment? It is: loving-kindness towards all sentient beings, diligence in the perfections, and following the objects of gathering. That is called the path to enlightenment. What is loving-kindness towards all sentient beings? It is that the young Bodhisattva pervades all realms of sentient beings with loving-kindness. How vast is the realm of sentient beings? As vast as the realm of space, so vast is the realm of sentient beings. Young one, just as there is nothing that is not pervaded by the realm of space. Young one, similarly, there is no sentient being in the realm of sentient beings that is not pervaded by the loving-kindness of the Bodhisattva. Young one, just as the realm of sentient beings is immeasurable, so too, young one, the cultivation of the Bodhisattva's loving-kindness is immeasurable. Young one, therefore, because space is infinite, sentient beings are infinite; because sentient beings are infinite, loving-kindness is infinite.
