Non-humans and others in the sky, rain down showers of divine flowers, and offer you with the sound of songs. These miraculous transformations are truly rare. Your form surpasses that of Vaishravana, and your radiance exceeds a hundred suns. In this world including Brahma and gods and humans, there is no one like you, let alone surpassing you. Having seen your excellent miracles and the superior qualities you possess, I think it is reasonable for the king to renounce the world. I have no doubt about it. Then, the Blessed One said to the householder merchant Good Protector: Alas! Householder, I see that the beings of this world are tormented by ten oppressions. What are the ten? They are: oppressed by birth, oppressed by old age, oppressed by sickness, oppressed by death, oppressed by sorrow, oppressed by lamentation, oppressed by suffering, oppressed by displeasure, oppressed by strife, and oppressed by samsara. Householder, having seen that the beings of this world are tormented by these ten oppressions, in order to attain the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, I first renounced the world from home. Then, the Blessed One spoke these verses at that time: All the childish beings trapped in the cage of samsara are oppressed by birth and afflicted by disease and old age. They grieve and lament, seeing that they are controlled by death. In order to be liberated from the cage of existence, I appeared for the sake of protection. Alas! Householder, I see that the beings of this world, due to hatred and universal torment, torment each other with ten things. What are the ten? They are: having harmed oneself, one generates universal torment in the mind; being harmed, one generates universal torment in the mind; about to be harmed, one generates universal torment in the mind; one's friend having been harmed, one generates universal torment in the mind; one's friend being harmed, one generates universal torment in the mind; one's friend about to be harmed, one generates universal torment in the mind;

And again, remorse arises, thinking: 'They have done harm to me and those who are unfriendly to me'; and again, remorse arises, thinking: 'They are doing harm to me and those who are unfriendly to me'; and again, remorse arises, thinking: 'They will do harm to me and those who are unfriendly to me'; and extreme hatred. Householder, these are the ten things that cause remorse in the mind. In order to eliminate all remorse, I shall attain unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment. Thus, with faith, he leaves home and goes forth into homelessness. Then, in order to fully explain this meaning, the Blessed One spoke these verses at that time: Alas! Beings are full of hatred, harming each other. The ten things of remorse cause all beings to be full of remorse. They have done harm to me and my relatives, or are doing it, or will do it. Therefore, remorse arises in his mind. Those who are unfriendly to me, they have done harm, or are doing it, or will do it. Therefore, remorse arises in his mind. These ten are the hatred of harm, which cause remorse to increase. Seeing these, in order not to want remorse, one goes forth. Alas! Householder, this world dwells in ten thickets of wrong views, covered by various wrong views. What are these ten? Namely: the thicket of wrong views that clings to self; the thicket of wrong views that clings to beings; the thicket of wrong views that clings to life; the thicket of wrong views that clings to the individual; the thicket of wrong views that clings to the constant; the thicket of wrong views that clings to the eternal; the thicket of wrong views that clings to inaction; the thicket of wrong views that clings to causelessness; the thicket of wrong views that clings to the cause of disharmony; and the thicket of wrong views that clings to wrong views, a total of ten. Householder, these are the thickets of wrong views that are clung to. In order to destroy all wrong views, I shall attain unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment. Thus, with faith, he leaves home and goes forth into homelessness.
