It is an assembly. Then, at that time, the Blessed One spoke these verses: Just as one knows fire from smoke, and water from water birds, a wise Bodhisattva knows the lineage from the signs. Not a crude or barbaric person, completely abandoning deceit and hypocrisy, being the most excellent among all sentient beings, that is a Bodhisattva. Son of good family, how does a Bodhisattva desire the mind of enlightenment? Son of good family, when this Bodhisattva abides in the lineage and generates the mind of enlightenment, if the Tathagata or the Shravaka of the Tathagata exhorts him in the right way, generates renunciation in the right way, causes him to hold in the right way, and generates the mind of unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment, that is the first cause of desiring the mind of enlightenment. Furthermore, having heard the praise of enlightenment and the mind of enlightenment, and thereby generating the mind of unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment, that is the second cause of desiring the mind of enlightenment. Furthermore, seeing sentient beings without protectors, without refuge, without a place, without relatives, and without an island, thinking, 'May I become the protector, refuge, place, relative, and island of these sentient beings,' thus abiding with a compassionate mind, and with that cause, that condition, and that basis, generating the mind of unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment, that is the third cause of desiring the mind of enlightenment. Furthermore, seeing the body of the Tathagata completely perfect in every aspect, thereby generating joy, generating great joy, generating extreme gentleness in the mind, generating joy in the mind, and with that cause, that condition, and that basis, generating the mind of unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment, that is the fourth cause of desiring the mind of enlightenment. Furthermore, for the benefit and happiness of all sentient beings, he gives charity, keeps the precepts, cultivates patience, exerts effort, engages in meditation, and cultivates wisdom, that

Then, how is giving practiced? To those who desire food, give food; to those who desire drink, give drink; to those who desire vehicles, give vehicles; to those who desire bedding, give bedding; to those who desire clothes, give clothes; to those who desire bracelets, armlets, earrings, rings, and ornaments, give ornaments. Son of good family, in short, even with one's own flesh, one can benefit sentient beings; this is how giving is practiced. And this giving is completely dedicated to the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment, and one does not become arrogant with this giving. Then, how is discipline maintained? That is, one is well-restrained in body, well-restrained in speech, and well-restrained in mind. All misconduct of body, completely, thoroughly, and entirely, one completely abandons; all misconduct of speech, and all misconduct of mind, completely, thoroughly, and entirely, one completely abandons, and one guards the discipline, so that it is not impaired, not broken, not mixed, and not defiled. This is how discipline is maintained. And this discipline is completely dedicated to the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment, and one does not become arrogant with this discipline. Then, how is patience cultivated? Whether one is a householder or a renunciant, if one is reviled, obstructed, beaten, cut, bound, thrown into a fire pit, shot with arrows, or subjected to various kinds of torment, one endures it, and one is willing to accept it. This is how patience is cultivated. And this patience is completely dedicated to the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment, and one does not become arrogant with this patience. Then, how is diligence initiated? That is, one thinks thus: For example, just as the realm of space is infinite and boundless, so too is the realm of sentient beings infinite and boundless. Therefore, I, alone and without a second, shall place them in the realm of nirvana without remainder. Thinking thus, that cause, that condition,

He begins with diligence, and he abides closely with mindfulness associated with the body in relation to the sensations of the body. When he strives to abide closely in relation to sensations, he dwells contemplating the mind, and he also strives to dwell contemplating the Dharma in relation to the Dharma. Thus, with mindfulness very closely established, he generates desire to prevent the arising of unwholesome and unwholesome dharmas that have not yet arisen. He exerts himself, initiates diligence, holds the mind, and properly establishes it. He generates desire to abandon unwholesome and unwholesome dharmas that have arisen. He exerts himself, initiates diligence, holds the mind, and properly establishes it. He generates desire to generate wholesome dharmas that have not yet arisen. He exerts himself, initiates diligence, holds the mind, and properly establishes it. He generates desire for the abiding, increasing, non-decline, non-forgetting, and completion of wholesome dharmas that have arisen. He exerts himself, initiates diligence, holds the mind, and properly establishes it. When he initiates diligence in this way, he cultivates the first limb of miraculous power. Likewise, he cultivates the second, third, and fourth limbs of miraculous power. Having thus perfected the limbs of miraculous power, he abides for an eon or more than an eon, and he perfects the perfection of diligence for an eon or more than an eon. Thus, he initiates diligence. He also dedicates that diligence to unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment, and he does not become arrogant with that diligence. How does he enter into meditative absorption? He does not abide in detachment from desire, he does not abide in obstruction, he has not completely dedicated himself to abandonment, he does not abide within, he does not abide without, he does not abide in form, he does not abide in sensation, he does not abide in perception, he does not abide in formations, he does not abide in consciousness, he does not abide in the desire realm, he does not abide in the form realm.
