Thus he thinks. Shariputra, again, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva goes into a place transformed into a watery wilderness, he should not be afraid, he should not be terrified, he should not be associated with terror. Why is that? Because a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is of a nature that is fearless and free from all terror. He should generate the mind in this way: 'I shall train myself to cut off all the craving of all sentient beings.' If I die, killed by drought demons, I shall be born in the world of the pretas. Thus, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should not be afraid, should not be terrified, should not be associated with terror. However, alas! These sentient beings have little merit, so such a place transformed into a watery wilderness appears in this world. Thus, he generates a mind of great compassion towards all sentient beings. Just as in the Buddha-field where I manifest complete perfect enlightenment in unsurpassed complete perfect enlightenment, in all ways, in all aspects, everything will not arise and will not be known, so shall I do. Just as all sentient beings will also obtain water with eight qualities, so should one take hold of merit. Just as at that time my perfection of diligence will be completely fulfilled, so for the sake of all sentient beings, I shall firmly undertake diligence. Thus he thinks. Shariputra, again, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva goes to a place of famine and desolation, he should not be afraid, he should not be terrified, he should not be associated with terror, he should put on armor in this way: Just as in the Buddha-field where I manifest complete perfect enlightenment in unsurpassed complete perfect enlightenment, such a place of famine and desolation will not arise or be known in all ways, in all aspects, and all those sentient beings will flourish in happiness, be endowed with well-being, and meet with all happiness, so I shall firmly undertake diligence. Thus I shall purify the Buddha-field. Just as whatever thoughts those sentient beings have

Whatever I think in my mind, may it be accomplished immediately. Just as whatever the gods of the Thirty-Three think in their minds is immediately accomplished, so may all that these sentient beings think in their minds be accomplished, and may all that they think in their minds come to pass. Just as at that time my perfection of meditative concentration will be complete, so for the sake of all sentient beings, I should strive to completely purify my own mind. If the Dharma aspirations of these sentient beings are fulfilled, and all the necessities of life for all sentient beings are never lacking in any way at any time, then one should steadfastly undertake diligence. Shariputra, furthermore, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva goes into a solitary place of sickness, he should not hesitate, he should not be afraid, and he should not be filled with fear. He should examine, think, and measure in this way: There is no Dharma here that causes sickness, nor is there any Dharma that needs to be healed. Therefore, he should contemplate emptiness, he should not hesitate, he should not be afraid, and he should not be filled with fear. Shariputra, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva should not generate this thought: "After a long time, I will awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment." He should not generate such a thought, he should not hesitate, he should not be afraid, and he should not be filled with fear. Why is that? Because this instant of mind is the unprecedented end, like that which is without end. Shariputra, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva should not generate such a difficult perception: "This unprecedented end is long and protracted; this unprecedented end is connected with a single instant of mind, like that which is without end." Shariputra, therefore, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva should not think that after a long time he will awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, he should not hesitate, he should not
