World Honored One, is one who practices in this way practicing in the profound? Subhuti replied, "World Honored One, one who practices in this way does not practice in anything. Why is that? Because in this way, all practices do not apply to him, and there is no practice." The World Honored One said, "Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom." Subhuti replied, "World Honored One, he practices in the ultimate truth." The World Honored One said, "Subhuti, what do you think? Does a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who practices in the ultimate truth practice in characteristics?" Subhuti replied, "World Honored One, no." The World Honored One said, "Subhuti, what do you think? Does he not destroy those characteristics?" Subhuti replied, "World Honored One, no." The World Honored One said, "Subhuti, what do you think? Does a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who practices the Perfection of Wisdom destroy characteristics?" Subhuti replied, "World Honored One, when that Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the practice of a Bodhisattva, he does not think, 'How will I attain the abandonment of characteristics here?' If he thinks he will attain it, then because all the Buddha's teachings are not complete, he will become a Hearer. World Honored One, what is the nature of characteristics, and what are characteristics? He also understands those characteristics, and he is also well-versed in the absence of those characteristics. This is called a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva's skillful means." Then, the Venerable Shariputra said to the Venerable Subhuti, "Venerable Subhuti, if a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva cultivates the three doors of liberation—emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness—in a dream, will his Perfection of Wisdom increase?" Subhuti said, "Venerable Shariputra, if it increases when cultivated during the day, then it will also increase in a dream. Why is that? Venerable Shariputra, there is no distinction between dream and day." The World Honored One said this

Endowed with life, Shariputra, if a Bodhisattva Mahasattva obtains the Prajnaparamita, and practices the Prajnaparamita as if for a single day, then at that time, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva who is accustomed to the Prajnaparamita, even in his dreams, the Prajnaparamita will increase. Shariputra said: Endowed with life, Subhuti, if any man or woman performs a virtuous or non-virtuous deed in a dream, will that deed increase or come close to increasing? Subhuti said: As the Bhagavan has said, all dharmas are like dreams, so the deed will not increase or come close to increasing. Endowed with life, Shariputra, if that person awakens and discriminates and generates the thought of killing, then the deed will increase or come close to increasing. Endowed with life, Shariputra, also, if in a dream one has committed killing, and discriminates and generates the thought of killing, and if upon awakening, one also discriminates in this way: Alas, I have killed, I have killed well, I have killed exceedingly, I have killed, and if one discriminates in this way and generates the thought of killing, then, endowed with life, Shariputra, that deed will increase or come close to increasing. Shariputra said: Endowed with life, Subhuti, if that person, even after awakening, discriminates in this way, and generates the thought of killing, Alas, I have killed, I have killed well, I have killed exceedingly, I have killed, and if one discriminates in this way and generates the thought of killing, if in this way the deed will increase or come close to increasing, then, since the Tathagata Bhagavan also generates the discrimination of the thought of cessation, will his deed also increase or come close to increasing? Subhuti said: Endowed with life, Shariputra, that is not so. Why is that? The Tathagata is separated from all thought and discrimination, just like the sky itself. Endowed with life, Shariputra, similarly, without an object, karma does not arise, without an object, mind does not arise. Endowed with life, Shariputra, in this way, karma arises only with an object, not without an object. Mind

It is not born without an object, but is born with an object. Shariputra, the venerable one! Mind arises in relation to the dharmas of seeing, hearing, feeling, and knowing, and some of these minds are completely attached to afflictions, while others are completely attached to purity. Shariputra, the venerable one! Therefore, the mind is born with an object, and not without an object. The mind is born with an object, and not without an object. Shariputra said: "Subhuti, the venerable one! When the Blessed One taught that all objects are empty, why is it that the mind is born with an object and not without an object?" Subhuti said: "Shariputra, the venerable one! By taking the characteristic as a condition, and focusing on the emptiness of all objects, after focusing, the mind is born with an object, and not without an object. Shariputra, the venerable one! The mind is empty, and the characteristic is also empty. Similarly, the formations conditioned by ignorance are also empty. Consciousness conditioned by formations is also empty, and so on, up to old age and death conditioned by birth are also empty. Shariputra, the venerable one! Similarly, all these objects are empty. The mind is also empty of characteristics, and relying on worldly conventions, the mind with an object arises. Shariputra said: "Subhuti, the venerable one! When a Bodhisattva Mahasattva performs generosity in a dream and dedicates that generosity to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, can it be called a well-dedicated offering?" Subhuti said: "Shariputra, the venerable one! This Bodhisattva Mahasattva Maitreya is present here. The Tathagata has prophesied that he will attain unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment without interruption. He is directly experiencing this meaning with his body. Please ask him, and he will answer this question." Then, Shariputra, the venerable one, said to the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Maitreya:
