He spoke. The venerable Maitreya said to the venerable Subhuti, "If the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Maitreya says he will answer this question, then the venerable Subhuti should answer this question." Then the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Maitreya said to the venerable Subhuti, "Venerable Subhuti, if it is said that the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Maitreya will answer this question, then venerable Subhuti, what is the name Maitreya, is it that which answers this question? Is it form that answers this question? Is it sensation, perception, volition, and consciousness that answer this question? Is it color that answers this question? Is it shape that answers this question? Is it the emptiness of form that answers this question? Similarly, it is the emptiness of sensation, perception, volition, and consciousness that answers this question. Venerable Subhuti, the emptiness of form cannot answer. Similarly, sensation, perception, volition, and, venerable Subhuti, the emptiness of consciousness cannot answer. Venerable Subhuti, the dharma by which one answers, that dharma I have not truly seen. The dharma to which one answers, that dharma I have not truly seen. The dharma with which one answers, that dharma I have not truly seen. The dharma that is prophesied to be unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment, that dharma I have not truly seen." Then the venerable Shariputra said to the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Maitreya: Venerable Maitreya, how are these dharmas indicated by words, have you also directly realized them in this way? Maitreya said: Venerable Shariputra, how are these dharmas indicated by words, I have not directly realized them in this way. Venerable Shariputra, those dharmas that are expressed by words or thought by the mind, I also do not know, do not observe, and have not truly seen in that way. Venerable Shariputra, however, how

Just as it is impossible to measure, impossible to express in words, and impossible to conceive in the mind, so too, all dharmas are without self-nature because of their lack of inherent existence. Then, the venerable Shariputra thought to himself: "Alas, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Maitreya is truly profound in wisdom! In any case, he demonstrates the Perfection of Wisdom as if he has practiced it for a long time." Then, the Blessed One said to the venerable Shariputra: "Shariputra, why do you think to yourself: 'Alas, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Maitreya is truly profound in wisdom!' Shariputra, with what dharma do you possess, by which the dharma that distinguishes an Arhat, have you truly seen it?" Shariputra replied: "Blessed One, I have not seen it." The Blessed One said: "Shariputra, likewise, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, he does not think: 'This dharma has been prophesied to be unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment!' 'This dharma will be prophesied to be unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment!' 'This dharma is prophesied to be unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment!' 'This dharma will manifest unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment and become a Buddha!' If a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices in this way, he is practicing the Perfection of Wisdom. When he practices in this way, he will not be afraid, he will not be terrified, he will not become filled with fear. In order to gain the power of increase, I will not fail to become enlightened, he practices yoga in this way, and if he practices in this way, he is practicing the Perfection of Wisdom. Shariputra, furthermore, if a Bodhisattva Mahasattva enters a dwelling of wild animals, he should not be afraid, he should not be terrified, he should not become filled with fear. Why is that? Because he has completely given up everything for the benefit of all sentient beings. He should generate this thought: 'If I am eaten by wild animals, then for them, this is giving, this has become giving, and my giving'

The perfection of generosity will also be completely fulfilled. I will be close to unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. How will I ensure that in the Buddha-field where I attain unsurpassed perfect enlightenment and become a Buddha, all sentient beings who have gone to the realm of animals, from all to all, in all aspects, everything will not arise and be known, but will possess and fully enjoy the near enjoyment of the gods? I will think to do so. Shariputra, furthermore, if a Bodhisattva Mahasattva enters a den of thieves, he should not be afraid, should not always be terrified, and should not be possessed by constant fear. Why is that? Because the Bodhisattva Mahasattva is delighted in the root of virtue of completely giving away all possessions. Because the Bodhisattva Mahasattva must also abandon his body and must completely give away all utensils and necessities. He should generate this thought: If they rob me of all my utensils and necessities, may those possessions be given to those sentient beings. If someone takes my life, I should not generate harmful thoughts, anger, or hatred towards him, and I should not harm them with my body, speech, or mind. In that way, at that time, my perfection of generosity, perfection of discipline, and perfection of patience will be completely fulfilled, and I will be close to unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. How will I ensure that in the Buddha-field where I attain unsurpassed perfect enlightenment and become a Buddha, dens of thieves from all to all, in all aspects, everything will not arise and be known? I will do so, and I will accomplish it. How will I ensure that in the Buddha-field where I attain unsurpassed perfect enlightenment and become a Buddha, those faults and other faults also from all to all, in all aspects, everything will not arise and be known? I will strive to purify the Buddha-field completely.
