A perfectly enlightened Buddha does not abide in anything whatsoever. Why is that? Because the mind of the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened Buddha is extremely non-abiding, that is, it does not abide in the conditioned realm, nor does it abide in the unconditioned realm, nor does it arise from it. Then, the venerable Subhuti said this to the venerable Sariputra: Venerable Sariputra, likewise, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should abide in this way, and should train in this way: Just as the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened Buddha does not abide in anything, nor is it non-abiding, nor does it abide inconsistently, nor is it inconsistently non-abiding, one should abide in that way. One should think, 'How is the abode of the Tathagata?' One should abide in that way, and should train in that way. One should think, 'How is the abode of the Tathagata?' If one abides in that way, one knows that one abides in a non-abiding manner. One should train in this way. A Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should abide in this way, and should train in that way. A Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who trains in this way abides in this abiding of the Perfection of Wisdom, and is not separated from this attention. Then, some of the gods in that assembly thought: 'The language of the Yakshas, the hair of the Yakshas, the words of the Yakshas, the speech of the Yakshas, and whatever is said by the Yakshas, those are understandable. However, what the venerable Subhuti teaches, speaks, shows, and closely shows is not understandable.' Then, the venerable Subhuti, through the power of the Buddha, knowing with his mind the nature of the thoughts of those gods, said to those gods: 'Gods, the saying 'unknowable, unknowable' is because nothing has been said about it, and nothing has been heard about it.' Then, those gods thought again: 'Ah, the noble Subh

This will clarify, alas! The noble Subhuti will clarify this. The noble Subhuti is even longer than long, the noble Subhuti is even finer than fine, even deeper than deep, he contemplates clarifying and proclaiming. Then again, by the power of the Buddha, the venerable Subhuti, knowing the thoughts of those gods, spoke to them thus: Gods, therefore, whoever desires to attain the fruit of stream-entry, and whoever desires to abide in the fruit of stream-entry, cannot achieve it without relying on this forbearance. Similarly, by analogy, whoever desires to attain the fruit of once-returner, and whoever desires to abide in the fruit of once-returner; whoever desires to attain the fruit of non-returner, and whoever desires to abide in the fruit of non-returner; whoever desires to attain the state of Arhat, and whoever desires to abide in the state of Arhat; whoever desires to attain Pratyekabuddhahood, and whoever desires to abide in Pratyekabuddhahood, cannot achieve it without relying on this forbearance. Whoever desires to attain unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment, and whoever desires to abide in unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment, cannot achieve it without relying on this forbearance. Then those gods thought thus: What kind of nature should we seek for the noble Subhuti to listen to the Dharma? Then, by the power of the Buddha, the venerable Subhuti, knowing the thoughts of those gods, said to them: Gods, you should seek that I listen to the Dharma as if it were an illusion and a magic trick. Why is that? Because in this way, they will not hear, nor will they realize it. Then those gods said to the venerable Subhuti: Noble Subhuti, do you think that those sentient beings are like illusions, are they not illusions? After saying this, the venerable Subhuti said to those gods: Gods, those sentient beings are like illusions, gods, those sentient beings are like dreams, gods, in that case, illusion

Mothers and sentient beings are not two, they are inseparable. Likewise, dreams and sentient beings are not two, they are inseparable. Sons of the gods, all phenomena are like illusions, like dreams. Stream-enterers are also like illusions, like dreams. The fruit of stream-entry is also like an illusion, like a dream. Similarly, once-returners and the fruit of once-returning, non-returners and the fruit of non-returning, Arhats are also like illusions, like dreams. Arhatship itself is also like an illusion, like a dream. Solitary Buddhas are also like illusions, like dreams. Solitary Buddhahood itself is also like an illusion, like a dream. Perfectly enlightened Buddhas are also like illusions, like dreams. Perfectly enlightened Buddhahood itself is also like an illusion, like a dream. Then, those sons of the gods said this to the venerable Subhuti: Venerable Subhuti, perfectly enlightened Buddhas are also like illusions, like dreams. Do you say that? Or do you say that perfectly enlightened Buddhahood itself is also like an illusion, like a dream? Subhuti said: Sons of the gods, Nirvana is also like an illusion, like a dream, what need is there to mention other dharmas? The sons of the gods said: Venerable Subhuti, do you say that Nirvana is also like an illusion, like a dream? The venerable Subhuti said: Sons of the gods, if I were to say that there is another dharma that is more excellent than Nirvana, that too would be like an illusion, like a dream. Sons of the gods, thus, illusion and Nirvana are not two, they are inseparable. Thus, dreams and Nirvana are not two, they are inseparable. Then, the venerable Shariputra and the venerable Gangpo Maitreya's son and the venerable Mahakashyapa and the venerable Mahakatyayana and the venerable Mahakashyapa and other great Shravakas, together with thousands of Bodhisattvas, said this to the venerable Sthavira Subhuti: Venerable Subhuti, Prajnaparamita
