will become. What is the reason for that? Shariputra, all dharmas are definitely without arising and without birth. Shariputra, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who practices in that way will be close to all-knowingness. In whatever way he becomes close to all-knowingness, in that way, for the sake of fully maturing sentient beings, his body and mind are completely purified, and his marks are completely purified, and the Buddha-field is completely purified, and he also becomes close to the Buddha. Shariputra, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who practices the Perfection of Wisdom in that way is close to all-knowingness. Furthermore, the Venerable Subhuti, beginning with the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, spoke as follows: If one practices on form, one practices on a sign. If one practices on the sign of form, one practices on a sign. If one practices thinking that form is a sign, one practices on a sign. If one practices on the arising of form, one practices on a sign. If one practices on the cessation of form, one practices on a sign. If one practices on the destruction of form, one practices on a sign. If one practices thinking that form is emptiness, one practices on a sign. If one practices thinking that I am practicing, one practices on a sign. If one practices thinking that I am a Bodhisattva, one practices on a sign. If one thinks that I am a Bodhisattva, then one practices on the object of focus itself. Similarly, if one practices on feeling, perception, and formations, and if one practices on consciousness, one practices on a sign. If one practices on the sign of consciousness, one practices on a sign. If one practices thinking that consciousness is a sign, one practices on a sign. If one practices on the arising of consciousness, one practices on a sign. If one practices on the cessation of consciousness, one practices on a sign. If one practices on the destruction of consciousness, one practices on a sign. If one practices thinking that consciousness is emptiness, one practices on a sign. If one practices thinking that I am practicing, one practices on a sign. If one practices thinking that I am a Bodhisattva, one practices on a sign.

Furthermore, if one thinks, 'Whatever one practices in that way is practicing in the Perfection of Wisdom, and that is cultivating the Perfection of Wisdom,' then that is practicing with characteristics. This Bodhisattva should be recognized as unskilled in means. Then, the venerable Śāriputra said to the venerable Subhūti, 'Venerable Subhūti, how does a Bodhisattva Mahāsattva practice in order to practice in the Perfection of Wisdom?' After saying this, the venerable Subhūti said to the venerable Śāriputra, 'Venerable Śāriputra, if a Bodhisattva Mahāsattva does not practice form, does not practice the characteristic of form, does not practice form as a characteristic, does not practice the arising of form, does not practice the cessation of form, does not practice the destruction of form, does not practice form as emptiness, does not practice 'I practice,' does not practice 'I am a Bodhisattva,' does not practice 'I am a Bodhisattva' as an object of focus. Similarly, if it is not on feeling, not on perception, not on formations. If one does not practice consciousness, does not practice the characteristic of consciousness, does not practice consciousness as a characteristic, does not practice the arising of consciousness, does not practice the cessation of consciousness, does not practice the destruction of consciousness, does not practice consciousness as emptiness, does not practice 'I practice.' One does not practice 'I am a Bodhisattva,' one does not practice 'I am a Bodhisattva' as an object of focus. If Furthermore, if one thinks, 'Whatever one practices in that way is practicing in the Perfection of Wisdom, and that is cultivating the Perfection of Wisdom,' if one does not think in this way. The Bodhisattva Mahāsattva who is practicing now is practicing in the Perfection of Wisdom. Even if one practices, one does not think of practicing. One does not think of not practicing. One thinks of practicing even while not practicing. One does not think of neither practicing nor not practicing.

nor does he conceive. He does not conceive of thinking that it should be used. He does not conceive of thinking that it should not be used. He does not conceive of thinking that it should be used and that it should not be used. He does not conceive of thinking that it should not be used and that it should not be used. Why is that? Because all dharmas are not conceived and not grasped. This is the samadhi of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva called not taking all dharmas, which is vast and leading, and is definitely not shared by all Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. The Bodhisattva Mahasattva who abides in this samadhi will quickly realize the unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment. Then, by the power of the Buddha, the venerable Subhuti, endowed with life, said this: Blessed One, that Bodhisattva Mahasattva who abides in this samadhi was predicted by the Tathagatas, Arhats, and Samyaksambuddhas of the past to attain unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment. He does not truly see that samadhi, nor does he have pride in the samadhi. I am abiding in equanimity. I enter into samadhi. I abide in samadhi. I think I have entered into samadhi. Such things are completely absent from him in every way. After saying this, the venerable Shariputra said to the venerable Subhuti, endowed with life: Venerable Subhuti, by which samadhi does the Bodhisattva Mahasattva abide, and can you show that samadhi by which the Tathagatas, Arhats, and Samyaksambuddhas predict unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment? Subhuti said: Venerable Shariputra, that is not so. Why is that? Because that son of good family does not know that samadhi, nor does he truly know it. The venerable Shariputra said: Venerable Subhuti, are you saying that he does not know and does not truly know? Venerable Subhuti
