Chapter One: The Practice of the All-Knowing One. Chapter One: The Practice of the All-Knowing One. In Sanskrit: Ārya Aṣṭa Sāhasrikā Prajñā Pāramitā. (The Holy Perfection of Wisdom in Eight Thousand Lines). Volume One. Homage to all Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Holy Hearers, and Solitary Buddhas! Thus have I heard: At one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in Rajagriha on Vulture Peak Mountain, together with a great community of monks, twelve hundred and fifty monks in all. All were Arhats, their defilements exhausted, free from afflictions, having attained mastery, their minds utterly liberated, their wisdom utterly liberated, valiant, great elephants. They had done what had to be done, accomplished what had to be done, cast off their burdens, attained their own benefit, utterly exhausted all bonds of existence, their minds utterly liberated through perfect knowledge, having attained the supreme mastery over all minds. Except for one person, namely the venerable Ananda. Then, the Blessed One addressed the venerable Subhuti, saying: "Subhuti, beginning with the Perfection of Wisdom of the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas, how the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas will definitely arise in the Perfection of Wisdom, so you should proclaim." Then, the venerable Shariputra thought to himself: "Will this venerable Subhuti, by generating the power of his own wisdom's eloquence, or by being blessed by the power of his own wisdom's eloquence, closely show the Perfection of Wisdom of the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas? Or will it be by the power of the Buddha?" Then, by the power of the Buddha, the venerable Subhuti, knowing with his mind the thought of the venerable Shariputra in such a way, spoke to the venerable Shariputra thus: "Venerable Shariputra, whatever the Hearers of the Blessed One speak, teach,

are making it clear, are making it lucid, are making it completely clear, all of those should be understood as the power of the Thus-Gone One's being. Why is that? Because whatever Dharma the Thus-Gone One has taught, those disciples manifestly realize and hold that Dharma-nature. After they have manifestly realized and held that Dharma-nature, whatever they explain, whatever they indicate, whatever they approximately indicate, whatever they express, whatever they make clear, whatever they make completely clear, all of those are not in contradiction with the Dharma-nature. O life-possessing Shariputra, those sons of good family who thus approximately indicate the Dharma-nature, not contradicting the Dharma-nature, that too is a common cause of the Thus-Gone One's teaching of the Dharma. Then, by the power of the Buddha, the life-possessing Subhuti said this to the Blessed One: "Whatever the Blessed One said, 'Subhuti, beginning with the Prajnaparamita of the Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, how the Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas will definitely arise from the Prajnaparamita, thus you should be confident.' Blessed One, the term Bodhisattva Bodhisattva, Blessed One, for example, the word Bodhisattva, what Dharma is this a designation for? Blessed One, for example, I have not truly seen the Dharma called Bodhisattva. Blessed One, for example, I have not truly seen the Dharma called Prajnaparamita either. Blessed One, I neither know, nor perceive, nor truly see the Bodhisattva or the Dharma of the Bodhisattva, nor do I know the Prajnaparamita, nor perceive it, nor truly see it, then which Bodhisattva and which Prajnaparamita shall I advise and instruct? Blessed One, however, if one speaks, teaches, and approximates in this way, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva's mind does not cower, does not shrink back in any way, is not afraid, does not become timid, this mind

Not doing back, not being destroyed, not turning back, not being timid, never being afraid, if never having fear, then this is the Bodhisattva Mahasattva's following teaching on the Prajnaparamita. This is the Bodhisattva Mahasattva's cognition of the Prajnaparamita. This is the teaching of the Prajnaparamita. If abiding in this way, this is this teaching and following teaching. World Honored One, furthermore, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Prajnaparamita, cultivates the Prajnaparamita, how should one learn so that this Bodhicitta does not generate arrogance, one should learn in this way. What is the reason for that? Because, this mind is not mind, the nature of mind is luminosity. After that, the Venerable Shariputra said to the Venerable Subhuti: Venerable Subhuti, what do you think, does the mind that is without mind exist? After saying this, the Venerable Subhuti said to the Venerable Shariputra: Venerable Shariputra, what do you think, the mindlessness itself, that mindlessness itself, is it existent or non-existent, is it existent or observable? Shariputra said: Venerable Subhuti, that is non-existent. Subhuti said: Venerable Shariputra, if mindlessness does not exist, neither exists nor is observable, then, Venerable Shariputra, you say like this "mind, does the mind that is without mind exist", how can your debate be reasonable? After saying this, the Venerable Shariputra said to the Venerable Subhuti: Venerable Subhuti, what is that mindlessness itself? Subhuti said: Venerable Shariputra, that mindlessness is unchanging, without discrimination. After that, the Venerable Shariputra gave praise to the Venerable Subhuti saying: Venerable Subhuti, in any case, you are abiding in the non-afflicted by the World Honored One
