The five hundred nuns generated the Dharma eye, stainless and without defilement, towards the dharmas. Five thousand gods and humans obtained tolerance for the Dharma of non-arising. Sixty Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, without grasping, their minds were completely liberated from the outflows. Then, the Bhagavan spoke to the venerable Sharadvatiputra, saying: "Sharadvatiputra, those Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas have paid homage to five hundred Buddhas and offered alms to all those Tathagatas. Having renounced from them, they guarded their morality, cultivated patience, exerted diligence, and accomplished meditative stabilizations. Sharadvatiputra, however, those Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas were not fully grasped by the Perfection of Wisdom and were devoid of skillful means. Therefore, they became beings of diverse conceptions and different behaviors. They thought, 'This is generosity.' Likewise, 'This is the patron.' 'This is the beggar.' 'One should give in this way.' 'One should give to this person.' Similarly, 'This is morality.' 'We are endowed with morality in this way.' 'Morality should be guarded in this way.' Similarly, 'This is patience.' 'We are endowed with patience in this way.' 'This patience should be cultivated in this way.' Similarly, 'This is diligence.' 'We are endowed with diligence in this way.' 'This diligence should be exerted in this way.' Similarly, 'These are meditative stabilizations.' 'We are endowed with meditative stabilization in this way.' 'One should enter into these meditative stabilizations in this way.' They became beings with such conceptions. They gave alms, guarded morality, cultivated patience, exerted diligence, and entered into meditative stabilizations without being fully grasped by the Perfection of Wisdom and without being fully grasped by skillful means. They did not obtain the state without diverse conceptions, through which one could enter the faultless state of a Bodhisattva. Therefore, they did not enter the faultless state of a Bodhisattva, but rather entered the fruit of stream-entry.

Having obtained the son, likewise, one attains even to the state of an Arhat. Sharadvatiputra, furthermore, the path to enlightenment of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, the door to liberation, emptiness, also exists; signlessness also exists; the door to liberation, wishlessness, also exists. However, because they are not completely grasped by the Perfection of Wisdom, and because they are devoid of skillful means, having directly realized the true limit, they become either Hearers or Solitary Buddhas. After thus speaking, the venerable Sharadvatiputra said this to the Blessed One: Venerable Blessed One, for what reason do Hearers or those of the Solitary Buddha vehicle, while meditating on those very dharmas of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, not being completely grasped by the Perfection of Wisdom, and being devoid of skillful means, having directly realized the true limit, become Hearers or Solitary Buddhas? But Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, even while meditating on those very dharmas of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, being completely grasped by the Perfection of Wisdom, and relying on skillful means, having directly realized the true limit, awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. After thus speaking, the Blessed One said this to the venerable Sharadvatiputra: Sharadvatiputra, here, some individuals, being separated from the mind of all-knowingness, and not being completely grasped by the Perfection of Wisdom, and being devoid of skillful means, if they meditate on those dharmas of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, they become Hearers or Solitary Buddhas. Sharadvatiputra, here, Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, not being separated from the mind of all-knowingness, and being well grasped by the Perfection of Wisdom, and relying on skillful means, having directly realized great compassion, if they meditate on the dharmas of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, then, that is the Bodhisattva entering without fault, directly realizing unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment.

will be fully enlightened. Sharadvatiputra, for example, among the gods of the Thirty-Three, there is a wingless bird with a body of one hundred yojanas or three hundred yojanas. It thinks of coming to this Jambudvipa from there, wanting to live in this Jambudvipa. It jumps, and in the interval of jumping, it thinks like this: Now I have not fallen into Jambudvipa, but I will live among the gods of the Thirty-Three. Sharadvatiputra, what do you think? Can that wingless bird put itself back among the gods of the Thirty-Three? He replied: No, Venerable Bhagavan. The Bhagavan said: Sharadvatiputra, if that wingless bird, while falling from there, thinks like this: Alas, I should not be blown by the wind, nor be struck, but live in Jambudvipa. Sharadvatiputra, what do you think? Can that wingless bird live in Jambudvipa without being blown by the wind or struck? He replied: No, Venerable Bhagavan. It can only be blown by the wind and struck, falling into Jambudvipa, and then die, or face the suffering of death. Why is that? Venerable Bhagavan, any bird, if its body is large and without wings, falling from a high place, will become like that. The Bhagavan said: Sharadvatiputra, it is like that. Just as you said. Sharadvatiputra, a practitioner of the Bodhisattva Vehicle, if he gives alms for many kalpas, similarly keeps the precepts, practices patience, exerts effort, practices meditation, practices wisdom, but if he lacks the Perfection of Wisdom and lacks skillful means, and practices the Dharma of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, then, at the moment of realizing the truth, he will fall into the Hearer's ground or the Solitary Buddha's ground. Why is that? Because this practitioner of the Bodhisattva Vehicle lacks the mind of knowing all things, therefore, these dharmas for many kalpas.
