That which is the other shore of all dharmas, that is not all dharmas. Similarly, that which is the other shore of the eye element, that is not the eye element. Similarly, that which is the other shore of the form element and the eye consciousness element, that is not the eye consciousness element. Similarly, that which is the other shore of the ear element, the sound element, and the ear consciousness element, that is not the ear consciousness element. Similarly, that which is the other shore of the nose element, the smell element, and the nose consciousness element, and the tongue element, the taste element, and the tongue consciousness element, and the body element, the touch element, and the body consciousness element, and the mind element, the dharma element, and the mind consciousness element, that is not the mind consciousness element. Similarly, that which is the other shore of ignorance, that is not ignorance. Similarly, by analogy, that which is the other shore of aging and death, that is not aging and death. Similarly, that which is the other shore of the four mindfulnesses, that is not the four mindfulnesses. Similarly, by analogy, that which is the other shore of the noble eightfold path, that is not the noble eightfold path. Similarly, that which is the other shore of the ten powers of the Tathagata, that is not the ten powers of the Tathagata. Similarly, by analogy, that which is the other shore of the eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddha, those are not the eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddha. Similarly, that which is the other shore of omniscience, knowledge of the aspects of the path, and knowledge of all aspects, that is not knowledge of all aspects. Subhuti, just as the other shore of these dharmas is, so are all dharmas. Request: Venerable Bhagavan, if the other shore of these dharmas is such that all dharmas are also such, then, Venerable Bhagavan, in that case, would not the Bodhisattva Mahasattva not become fully enlightened to all dharmas? Why is that? Venerable Bhagavan, this is form, this is feeling, this is...

is perception. These are formations. This is consciousness. Similarly, combine, this is up to the state of all-knowingness, thinking that there is no discrimination whatsoever beyond form. Similarly, beyond feeling, beyond perception, beyond formations, beyond consciousness, there is no discrimination whatsoever. Similarly, combine, beyond the state of all-knowingness, it is for the sake of having no discrimination whatsoever. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, because of the emptiness of inherent existence, it is as it is said. Subhuti, this is the most difficult thing for Bodhisattva Mahasattvas to do, even if they definitely think about these dharmas that are so peaceful and so profound, they will not shrink back. They think like this: We should realize these dharmas, so that after we realize the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment and become Buddhas, we should teach these dharmas that are so profound to sentient beings. Subhuti, in that way, Bodhisattva Mahasattvas are the friends of the world. Subhuti, how are Bodhisattva Mahasattvas the islands of the world? Subhuti, for example, rivers, or lakes, or great lakes, or oceans, those places that are completely cut off by water are called islands. Subhuti, similarly, the previous limit and the later limit of form are completely cut off, those Bodhisattva Mahasattvas truly realize and understand that, and then teach the Dharma to sentient beings. Similarly, the previous limit and the later limit of feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness are completely cut off, those Bodhisattva Mahasattvas truly realize and understand that, and then teach the Dharma to sentient beings.

Those great Bodhisattvas, having thus fully comprehended, teach the Dharma to sentient beings. Subhuti, by the complete cessation of the Dharma of the past and future extremes, all Dharmas are completely ceased. Subhuti, whatever is the complete cessation of all Dharmas at the past and future extremes, that is just like the most excellent peace. That is to say: emptiness, signlessness, the complete cessation of the path, the exhaustion of craving, without remainder, detachment from desire, cessation, and what is called Nirvana. Subhuti, thus, Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas are the islands of the worlds. Subhuti, how do Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas hold the lamps and make light for the worlds? The Bhagavat-s, having truly understood the meaning of those things, hold them as they are, and also teach them to sentient beings, and cause sentient beings to truly hold, enter, and firmly establish them. Subhuti, thus, Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas hold the lamps and make light for the worlds. Subhuti, how do Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas become the leaders and guides of the worlds? Subhuti, here, Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, for sentient beings who have entered the wrong path and are going to bad migrations, in order to purify sentient beings, to truly liberate them from sorrow and harm, to extinguish suffering and displeasure, to realize the Dharma of reason, and to manifest Nirvana, teach the one path of liberation. Likewise, after fully awakening to unexcelled, perfect, complete enlightenment, they teach sentient beings the Dharma of form without arising, without ceasing, without defilement, and without purification. Likewise, they teach sentient beings that feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness are without arising, without ceasing, without defilement, and without purification.
