Having cultivated the third dhyana previously, abiding in it, and having abandoned that happiness, and also having abandoned suffering from before, since joy and displeasure have also ceased, therefore it is neither suffering nor happiness, it is equanimity and mindfulness completely purified, cultivating the fourth dhyana and abiding. These are called the four dhyanas. What are the four immeasurables? They are: loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity. These are called the four immeasurables. What are the four formless absorptions? They are: the sphere of infinite space, the sphere of infinite consciousness, the sphere of nothingness, and the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. These are called the four formless absorptions. What are the eight liberations? They are: one who has form contemplates forms, this is the first liberation. Internally perceiving formlessness, contemplating external forms, this is the second liberation. Focusing solely on beauty, this is the third liberation. Completely transcending all perceptions of form, the perceptions of obstacles cease, and no longer attending to various perceptions, thinking that space is infinite, cultivating the sphere of infinite space and abiding, this is the fourth liberation. Completely transcending all spheres of infinite space, thinking that consciousness is infinite, cultivating the sphere of infinite consciousness and abiding, this is the fifth liberation. Completely transcending all spheres of infinite consciousness, thinking that there is nothing, cultivating the sphere of nothingness and abiding, this is the sixth liberation. Completely transcending all spheres of nothingness, cultivating the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception and abiding, this is the seventh liberation. Completely transcending all spheres of neither perception nor non-perception, cultivating the cessation of perception and feeling and abiding, this is the eighth liberation. These are called the eight liberations. What is the gradual abiding in equipoise?

What are the nine? It is like this: being secluded from desires, secluded from sinful and unwholesome dharmas, with initial application and sustained application, having joy and pleasure born of seclusion, accomplishing and abiding in the first dhyana, this is the first attainment. Then, free from initial application and sustained application, with inner purity, the mind becomes one-pointed, without initial application, without sustained application, having joy and pleasure born of concentration, accomplishing and abiding in the second dhyana, this is the second attainment. Then, being free from attachment to joy, abiding in equanimity, being mindful and fully aware, experiencing pleasure with the body, the noble ones declare: 'The one who abides in pleasure with mindfulness is equanimous,' accomplishing and abiding in the third dhyana, which is without joy, this is the third attainment. Then, having abandoned pleasure, and having previously abandoned suffering, with the cessation of mental pleasure and mental displeasure, being neither suffering nor pleasure, the fourth dhyana, which is purity of equanimity and mindfulness, is accomplished and abided in, this is the fourth attainment. Then, completely transcending all perceptions of form, with the disappearance of perceptions of resistance, not attending to various perceptions, thinking 'space is infinite,' accomplishing and abiding in the sphere of infinite space, this is the fifth attainment. Then, completely transcending the sphere of infinite space, thinking 'consciousness is infinite,' accomplishing and abiding in the sphere of infinite consciousness, this is the sixth attainment. Then, completely transcending the sphere of infinite consciousness, thinking 'there is nothing,' accomplishing and abiding in the sphere of nothingness, this is the seventh attainment. Then, completely transcending the sphere of nothingness, accomplishing and abiding in the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, this is the eighth attainment. Then, completely transcending the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, accomplishing and abiding in the cessation of perception and feeling, this is the ninth attainment.

E. These are called the nine successive abidings in equipoise. What are the nine perceptions? They are: the perception of swelling, the perception of being livid, the perception of festering, the perception of being broken apart, the perception of being discolored, the perception of being eaten, the perception of being scattered, the perception of bones, and the perception of being burned. These are called the nine perceptions. What are the ten recollections? They are: recollection of the Buddha, recollection of the Dharma, recollection of the Sangha, recollection of morality, recollection of generosity, recollection of the deities, recollection of peace, recollection of breathing in and out, recollection of the body, and recollection of death. That is the knowledge of Dharma. What is the subsequent knowledge? It is the knowledge that knows that the eye is impermanent, and likewise, the ear, nose, tongue, body, mind, form, sound, smell, taste, touch, and phenomena are all impermanent. That is the subsequent knowledge. What is the knowledge of the minds of others? It is the knowledge that, through one's own mind, knows without doubt the minds of other sentient beings and other individuals, as well as the phenomena that arise from the mind. That is the knowledge of the minds of others. What is conventional knowledge? It is the knowledge that knows the path. That is conventional knowledge. What is the knowledge of suffering?
