Because, apart from applying terms with conventional symbols, no sentient being is perceived. Shariputra, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva abides in the two truths and teaches the Dharma to sentient beings. Shariputra, in those two truths, there is neither perception of sentient beings nor designation as sentient beings. However, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, skilled in means, engages in the Prajnaparamita and teaches the Dharma to sentient beings. Therefore, those sentient beings do not perceive selfhood even in this life, let alone who will attain and by what means. Shariputra, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, engaging in the Prajnaparamita, thus skillfully teaches the Dharma to sentient beings. Having spoken thus, the venerable Shariputra said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, alala, just as the Bodhisattva Mahasattva does not perceive any dharma, whether it is the same, different, or separate, and with what armor is it that he does not exist in the desire realm, nor in the form realm, nor in the formless realm, nor in the conditioned realm, nor in the unconditioned realm, and although he completely liberates sentient beings from the three realms, he does not perceive sentient beings or designation as sentient beings, such armoring is, Blessed One, very joyful. Because there is no designation as sentient beings, sentient beings are neither bound nor liberated. Because sentient beings are neither bound nor liberated, there is neither complete affliction nor purification. Because there is neither complete affliction nor purification, there is also no distinction of migrations. Where there is no distinction of migrations, there is also no karma, nor are there afflictions. Where there is no karma and no afflictions, then with what maturation will I or sentient beings exist in the cycle of the five destinies? How could maturation even exist? Having spoken thus, the Blessed One said to the venerable Shariputra: Shariputra, it is so, it is so.

It is so. Shariputra, if a sentient being previously existed and later ceased to exist, then because of that, if it previously existed and later ceased to exist, then there would also be faults for the Bodhisattva and the Tathagata. Also, the cycle of the five realms, if previously things existed and later things ceased to exist, then that would also be a fault. Shariputra, in this way, whether the Tathagatas appear or do not appear, the Dharma-nature of all Dharmas, suchness, and non-erroneous suchness, this is abiding. In that, there is no self, no sentient being, no life, no person, no doer, and no one who causes to do. Then, how could there be form in that? How could there be feeling, perception, and formations? How could there be consciousness? In those Dharmas that are neither existent nor non-existent, from where could there be the cycle of the five realms that completely liberates sentient beings? Shariputra, therefore, these Dharmas are thus naturally empty. The Bodhisattva Mahasattva, having heard from the past Tathagatas, Arhats, perfectly enlightened Buddhas, enters into the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, and for those ordinary beings who are deluded by perversion, apart from manifest clinging, there is no nature of Dharma that can be adhered to. The Bodhisattva Mahasattva, having thus donned armor, will not turn back from the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, and will not think, "I will not manifestly realize the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment," but will think, "I will manifestly realize the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment," and after manifestly attaining Buddhahood, in whatever way sentient beings can be completely liberated from perversion, he will benefit sentient beings with such Dharma, having thus donned armor. Shariputra, for example, a magician conjures a man by illusion to

Having emanated many hundreds of millions of hungry ghosts, and causing them to enjoy various foods and drinks, and making them full. Having caused them to be full, I have accumulated much merit. If he were to say this, Shariputra, what do you think? Do you think that they were actually fed and made full? He replied: Blessed One, no. The Blessed One said: Shariputra, likewise, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva also, from the time of generating the mind of enlightenment, practices the six perfections, practices the four meditations, practices the four immeasurables, practices the four formless absorptions, practices the four mindfulnesses, practices the four right abandonments, the four legs of magical power, the five faculties, the five powers, the seven branches of enlightenment, and practices the eightfold noble path, the fourteen emptinesses, the signless, the wishless samadhi, the ten powers of the Thus-Gone One, the four fearlessnesses, the four individual perfect knowledges, and practices the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha, and when training in the path of enlightenment, he purifies the Buddhafield and matures sentient beings, but does not fixate on any sentient being to be tamed. The Eighteen Thousand Stanza Perfection of Wisdom, the Fifty-fourth Chapter. Then, the venerable Subhuti said this to the Blessed One: Blessed One, what does the Bodhisattva Mahasattva practice in order to mature sentient beings and purify the Buddhafield? What is the path of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva? Having said this, the Blessed One said this to the venerable Subhuti: Subhuti, in this case, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, from the time of generating the mind of enlightenment, practices the perfection of generosity. The perfection of morality, the perfection of patience, and the perfection of diligence.
