The Seventh, the Sixteenth. The chapter on the armor for maturing sentient beings. The Seventh, the Sixteenth. The chapter on the armor for maturing sentient beings. Then, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, if a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the six perfections, as well as the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, as well as the ten powers of the Tathagata, as well as the four fearlessnesses, as well as the four analytical knowledges, as well as the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha, as well as the fourteen emptinesses, and has perfected the path to enlightenment, but does not have the fortune to attain the unexcelled, perfect, and complete enlightenment, Blessed One, how can a Bodhisattva Mahasattva attain the unexcelled, perfect, and complete enlightenment? The Blessed One replied: Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the perfection of wisdom, skillfully practices the perfection of generosity, and does not fixate on generosity, nor does he fixate on the giver and the receiver, nor does he practice other dharmas besides that, then the Bodhisattva Mahasattva will attain the path to enlightenment. Subhuti, in this way, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the perfection of wisdom, and with skillful means, he will attain the unexcelled, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Similarly, the other five perfections, as well as the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha, should also be applied in this way. Then, the venerable Shariputra said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, how does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, practicing the perfection of wisdom, strive on the path to enlightenment? After he said this, the Blessed One said to the venerable Shariputra: Shariputra, here, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, practicing the perfection of wisdom, with skillful means, does not combine with form, nor does he separate from form.

Why is that? Shariputra, like this, there is no inherent nature in form that can be combined or distinguished. It is the same up to consciousness, neither combining nor distinguishing. Why is that? Like this, there is no inherent nature in consciousness that can be combined or distinguished. There is no combining or distinguishing in the perfection of generosity. Why is that? Like this, there is no inherent nature in it that can be combined or distinguished. Similarly, up to the perfection of wisdom and the eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddha, there should also be no combining. Question: Blessed One, if there is no inherent nature in any dharma that can be combined or distinguished, then how can a Bodhisattva Mahasattva attain the perfection of wisdom through learning? If one does not learn the perfection of wisdom, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva cannot realize unexcelled, perfect enlightenment and become a Buddha. The Buddha said, Shariputra, it is so, it is so. Just as you have said, if one does not learn the perfection of wisdom, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva cannot realize unexcelled, perfect enlightenment and become a Buddha. This is because of skillful means, not because of unskillful means. Shariputra, if a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, practicing the perfection of wisdom, focuses on the inherent nature of some dharmas, then they will cling to those dharmas. What if they do not focus? This is the perfection of wisdom. This is the perfection of meditation. This is the perfection of diligence. This is the perfection of patience. This is the perfection of morality. This is the perfection of generosity. This is form. This is up to consciousness. This is up to the dharmas of the Buddhas. If even enlightenment is without focus, then what else would one cling to?

will hold onto something. Shariputra, the Perfection of Wisdom is ungraspable, and even all the Buddha's teachings are ungraspable. Shariputra, this Perfection of Wisdom is the ungraspable Perfection; thus is the Perfection of Wisdom. Therefore, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva should train in it. If a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who trains in it does not even perceive training, what need is there to mention Bodhi? What need is there to mention the Perfection of Wisdom? What need is there to mention the Bodhisattva's teachings? What need is there to mention the Buddha's teachings? What need is there to mention the teachings of the Solitary Buddhas, the teachings of the Hearers, and the teachings of ordinary beings? Why is that? Shariputra, it is because all these dharmas are without intrinsic nature. In that case, among all dharmas without intrinsic nature, what are the teachings of ordinary beings? What are the Stream-enterer, the Once-returner, the Non-returner, the Arhat, and the teachings of the Solitary Buddhas, Arhatship, Solitary Bodhi, the Bodhisattva, and even the Perfectly Awakened Buddha? If those individuals are unattainable, then by what dharma can it be said, 'This is an ordinary being'? 'This is the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Awakened Buddha'? How could the dharma that speaks of these things arise? He asked, "Venerable Lord, since all dharmas are without substance, from where do these arise and exist: 'This is an ordinary being,' 'This is the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Awakened Buddha'?" After he had asked this, the Venerable Lord said to the venerable Shariputra, "Shariputra, is there any substance in form, such as that which ignorant ordinary people manifestly cling to?" He asked, "Venerable Lord, there is no such thing, except that ordinary people manifestly cling to form with a deluded mind." He said, "Shariputra, what about feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness?
