With regard to consciousness, does an entity exist, or will it exist, like the way ordinary people are attached? Similarly, Shariputra, what do you think? In the intervals of all the Buddha's teachings, does an entity exist, or will it exist, like the way ordinary people are attached? He replied: Bhagavan, in the intervals of consciousness as perceived by the deluded mind of ordinary people, and in the intervals of all the Buddha's teachings, there is nothing other than the false imputation of entities. The Bhagavan said: Shariputra, it is just so, it is just so. Ordinary people, deluded by a deluded mind, falsely impute entities to phenomena that are without entity. Therefore, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, being skilled in means, he sees all those phenomena as without entity, and thereby enters into unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment. After he had spoken thus, the venerable Shariputra said this to the Bhagavan: Bhagavan, by what skillful means does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva truly see that all phenomena are without entity, and thereby enter into unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment? What is the skillful means of that Bodhisattva Mahasattva? After he had asked this, the Bhagavan said this to the venerable Shariputra: Shariputra, here, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, he does not truly see any entity of phenomena for which he would become angry, or for which he would become dejected by anger, or having become dejected, would become lazy, or having become lazy, would become indolent. Shariputra, in this way, ignorant beings are attached to what are called aggregates, or elements, or sense-fields, but apart from that, all phenomena are without entity, without life, separated from life, of the nature of non-entity, empty of inherent existence, and empty of their own characteristics.

It is just so. Therefore, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, he truly sees that all dharmas are of the nature of non-substantiality, empty of inherent existence, and empty of self-characteristics. He blesses his body like a magician and teaches the Dharma to sentient beings. To those sentient beings who are stingy, he speaks of generosity. To those sentient beings who are immoral, he speaks of morality. To those sentient beings who are filled with malice, he speaks of patience. To those sentient beings who are lazy, he speaks of diligence. To those sentient beings whose minds are distracted, he speaks of concentration. To those sentient beings whose wisdom is flawed, he speaks of wisdom. When he has established sentient beings in generosity and up to wisdom, he also speaks words that are excellent and certain, by which those sentient beings will obtain the fruit of stream-entry, up to the state of Arhatship, the attainment of Pratyekabuddhahood, and up to the attainment of omniscience. Then, the Venerable Shariputra said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, how does a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, thoroughly establish in generosity those sentient beings who do not exist and are not real, and thoroughly establish them up to the Perfection of Wisdom? And how does he utter excellent and certain words by which they will obtain the fruit of stream-entry and up to the attainment of omniscience? How does he act without any object of focus?" The Blessed One said to the Venerable Shariputra: "Shariputra, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who practices the Perfection of Wisdom has no object of focus whatsoever. Why is that? Because when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom,
