Having attained complete enlightenment and Buddhahood, the Tathagata possesses the ten powers, the four fearlessnesses, the four analytical knowledges, and the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha, and prophesies the three aggregates to sentient beings. After this was said, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, how does the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, generate the four dhyanas of the nature of non-reality? How does he generate the six superknowledges of the nature of non-reality? How does he prophesy the three aggregates to sentient beings when there are no sentient beings?" After this was said, the Blessed One said to the venerable Subhuti: "Subhuti, if the nature of desires or sinful, unwholesome dharmas existed, or if there existed a self-nature or other-nature. Subhuti, if I, in the past, while practicing the conduct of a Bodhisattva, had not realized that desires are of the nature of non-reality and that sinful, unwholesome dharmas are of the nature of non-reality, then I would not have practiced and abided in the first dhyana. Subhuti, thus, these desires and sinful, unwholesome dharmas are neither real nor unreal, neither self-nature nor other-nature, but are solely of the nature of non-reality. Therefore, I, in the past, while practicing the conduct of a Bodhisattva, having become secluded from desires and secluded from sinful, unwholesome dharmas, with initial application and sustained application, born of seclusion, with joy and bliss, practiced and abided in the first dhyana. The same should be applied up to the fourth dhyana. Subhuti, if the superknowledges were real, or self-nature, or other-nature. Subhuti, if I had not realized that all superknowledges are of the nature of non-reality, then I would not have attained the unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment. Subhuti, thus, all superknowledges are unreal.

One's own things and the things of others do not exist. In other words, it is only the nature of non-existence of things. Therefore, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, having understood all phenomena as the nature of non-existence of things through all his superknowledges, attained the unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment. Thus he spoke. Then the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, if a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, in the nature of non-existence of all phenomena, attains the unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment through the four meditations and the five superknowledges, then, Blessed One, in the nature of non-existence of all phenomena, what gradual practices, gradual trainings, and gradual accomplishments of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva will lead to the attainment of the unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment? Thus he spoke. The Blessed One said to the venerable Subhuti: Subhuti, here, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, from the very beginning, attends to and honors the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, and many Bodhisattva-Buddhas, as well as the Arhats, the Non-returners, the Once-returners, and the Stream-enterers. From the nature of non-existence of things of the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, and the nature of non-existence of things of the Pratyekabuddhas, and the nature of non-existence of things of the Arhats, and the nature of non-existence of things of the Non-returners, and the nature of non-existence of things of the Once-returners, and the nature of non-existence of things of the Stream-enterers, and the nature of non-existence of things of all the noble ones, and even the nature of non-existence of all conditioned things, he hears that there is not even the slightest bit at the tip of a hair. Having heard this, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva thinks thus: If the Buddha

The Blessed Ones and those who have entered the stream are of the nature of non-substantiality. Whether I attain unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment or not, all dharmas are only of the nature of non-substantiality. If I attain unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment, having become enlightened with unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment, I shall place all sentient beings who abide in the perception of substantiality in the nature of non-substantiality. Thinking thus, Subhuti, that Bodhisattva-Mahasattva correctly enters into unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment in order to completely liberate all sentient beings from suffering. Those former Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, having learned what, attained unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment, gradually acting, gradually learning, and gradually beginning to practice? He first learns the six perfections, namely the perfection of generosity, the perfection of ethics, the perfection of patience, the perfection of diligence, the perfection of meditation, and the perfection of wisdom. When he learns the perfection of generosity, he himself also gives generosity, and also encourages others to give generosity, and also proclaims the praise of generosity, and also praises and rejoices in those others who give generosity. Through that habit of generosity, he will obtain a great heap of enjoyment. He gives generosity with a mind free from stinginess, giving food to those who desire food, drink to those who desire drink, riding to those who desire riding, clothes to those who desire clothes, incense to those who desire incense, garlands of flowers to those who desire garlands of flowers, ointment to those who desire ointment, beds to those who desire beds, support to those who desire support, dwellings to those who desire dwellings, lamps to those who desire lamps, or whatever human necessities there may be, he gives them as generosity.
