Rabjor, why do you say this: "Bhagavan, Bodhisattva Mahasattvas are for knowing the aspects of the path"? Rabjor, Bodhisattva Mahasattvas should generate all paths and should know all paths. What are the paths of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, and what is the path of the Bodhisattvas, these paths should also be perfected. Although these paths perform the actions of the path, they do not realize the true limit. Question: Bhagavan, does the Bodhisattva Mahasattva not perfect the path of the Buddha, and does he not directly realize the true limit? The Buddha said: Rabjor, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva does not directly realize the true limit until he has purified the Buddha-field and has not matured sentient beings. Question: Bhagavan, does the Bodhisattva Mahasattva abide on the path and directly realize the true limit? The Buddha said: That is not so. Question: Bhagavan, then does he abide on the non-path? The Buddha said: That is not so. Question: Bhagavan, then does he abide on the path and the non-path? The Bhagavan said: That is not so. Question: Bhagavan, then does he abide on neither the path nor the non-path? The Bhagavan said: That is not so. Question: Bhagavan, then how does the Bodhisattva Mahasattva directly realize the true limit? The Buddha said: Rabjor, what do you think? Do you abide on the path and are your minds completely liberated from the outflows without grasping? Rabjor replied: Bhagavan, that is not so. The Buddha said: Then do you abide on the non-path? Rabjor replied: That is not so. The Buddha said: Then do you abide on the path and the non-path? Rabjor replied: Bhagavan, that is not so. The Buddha said: Then do you abide on neither the path nor the non-path, and are your minds completely liberated from the outflows without grasping? Rabjor replied: Bhagavan

Venerable one, it is not so. World Honored One, where do I abide that I am liberated in mind from the outflows? It is not so. World Honored One, my mind does not abide anywhere in any way, therefore the mind is liberated. The World Honored One said: Subhuti, likewise, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva should also manifest the true limit without abiding in anything. Subhuti, that which is called all-aspects-knowing, that which is called all-aspects-knowing, is called all-aspects-knowing by one aspect, that is, by the aspect of peace. Subhuti, also, with what aspects, what signs, and what characteristics are dharmas said to be empty, the Tathagata has understood all those aspects, those signs, and those characteristics, therefore it is called all-aspects-knowing. They said: World Honored One, among the three all-knowingnesses, namely all-knowingness, knowledge of the aspects of the path, and all-aspects-knowingness, the abandonment of this is with remainder, and the abandonment of this is without remainder, is there a difference in the abandonment of afflictions? The World Honored One said: Subhuti, there is no difference in the abandonment of afflictions, but the Tathagata has abandoned all the connections of habitual tendencies. The Hearers and Solitary Buddhas have not abandoned all the connections of habitual tendencies. They said: World Honored One, is the abandonment of afflictions not done before obtaining all-aspects-knowingness? The World Honored One said: Subhuti, it is so. They said: World Honored One, is there a difference to be observed in the not done? The World Honored One said: Subhuti, it is not so, there is no difference to be observed in the not done. They said: World Honored One, if there is no difference to be observed in the not done, then why does the World Honored One say this: This is the abandonment of the connections of habitual tendencies, and this is not the abandonment of the connections of habitual tendencies? The World Honored One said: Subhuti, the connections of habitual tendencies are not afflictions, because the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas have attachment and

Even though free from hatred and ignorance, bodily changes may still occur. However, these changes do not harm individual ordinary beings, nor do they affect the Hearers (Śrāvakas), for the Tathāgata does not possess these changes. Then, the venerable Subhūti said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, if the path is not a real entity, and nirvāṇa is not a real entity, then why is it said that this is a stream-enterer, this is a once-returner, this is a non-returner, this is an Arhat, and this is a Pratyekabuddha?" The Blessed One replied: "Subhūti, all those from the stream-enterer to the Tathāgata, the Arhat, the perfectly complete Buddha, are distinguished by the unconditioned (asaṃskṛta)." Subhūti asked: "Blessed One, how is it distinguished by the unconditioned that this is a stream-enterer, and this is between the Tathāgata, the Arhat, and the perfectly complete Buddha?" The Blessed One replied: "Subhūti, the unconditioned does not distinguish, but it is merely expressed by taking worldly conventions as a standard. In ultimate reality, it cannot be distinguished. Why? Because it cannot be designated by the path of words." Subhūti asked: "Blessed One, how is the later limit (apara-koṭi) designated?" The Blessed One replied: "Subhūti, taking worldly conventions as a standard, the later limit is designated for those that are terminated in various ways, but not in ultimate reality." Subhūti asked: "Blessed One, since all dharmas are empty of their own nature, and the former limit (pūrva-koṭi) is not perceived, what need is there to mention the later limit?" The Blessed One replied: "Subhūti, it is so, it is so. Since all dharmas are empty of their own nature, and the former limit is not perceived, what need is there to mention the later limit? For it is without a place. Subhūti, however, for those sentient beings who do not understand that all dharmas are empty of their own nature, it is merely shown to them that this is the former limit, and this is the later limit. Subhūti, empty of its own nature
